Free Music Review: Welcome to the Dollhouse: No sophomore slump

Most artists fail to impress on the album following a debut. Few artists can recreate their sound/direction and have just as much, if not more success the second time around. Danity Kane, however, has done just that.
I do have their debut and have had it since its release. It's a fusion of hip-hop/r&b and some light sprinkling of pop. It is obvious they were an urban type of artist, especially as they were on Bad Boy. This approach felt contrived to me. The girls had no input, and the songs weren't true reflections of themselves. Only the tracks "One Shot", "Want It", "Ride 4 You", "Ooh Ahh", and the "Come Over" interlude impressed me. Luckily they left that sound behind.
The girls have stated in interviews they wanted to break into the UK/European market with this release, and the pop/dance/r&b/electronic fusion they have gone for has prepared them in many ways. This is European-friendly material, in all forms (with a slight spice of American R&B, which works this time around). More creative control (and vocal showcasing for Aubrey and Shannon) help shape this stellar release. First single "Damaged" features often-ignored Shannon Bex on first lead vocal, and the song has just now impacted radio at #64 on the BB Hot 100. The video was released itself one week before the album, but now sits at the top of iTunes' video chart, and the album itself occupied the #1 and #3 (now #2, and #3, respectively) spots on the iTunes charts, soundly beating competition from Flo-Rida (whose album was nowhere to be seen). The album is now expected to debut at #1 on the BB 200 album chart with 250-275,000 sales (considering little promo for their single outside of a reality show).
Now onto to the tracks:
1. Welcome to the Dollhouse f/Diddy 2/5, pointless. Diddy needs to stay away from his artists' releases.
2. Bad Girl f/Missy Elliott 5/5 Crazy beat, worthy rap by Ms. E. Special effects with the vocals. Draws you in..great single choice here and in the UK.
3. Damaged 5/5 1st single (radio edit is much better, cuts out Diddy)
4. Pretty Boy 4/5 Innovative beat, clear vocals. Pure fun.
5. Strip Tease 4/5 Mini-Pussycat Dolls, hmm? Sexual song, fun and for those special times with your loved one.
6. Sucka For Love 5/5 Standout track! Terrific synths, and infectious chorus. Single number two please.
7. Secret Place 4/5 First interlude. Works well with powerful vocals.
8. Ecstasy f/Rick Ross. 4/5 Unnecessary rap, however the song does not suffer. Reminiscent (only slightly) of "Show Stopper".
9. 2 Of You 4/5 Crazy lyrics! The beat is similar to PCD's "Wait A Minute", but this is just as much fun.
10. Lights Out 5/5 Another stellar song! Sounds like Britney's "Radar", but this is another great song.
11. Picture This. 3/5 Second interlude. Leads into Poetry. Just average to me. Emotionally driven spoken lyrics.
12. Poetry 3/5 I understand why so many love this track, but I usually skip it. The lyrics sound very contrived to me, and the girls are trying to outsing each other. Not that impressive.
13. Key To My Heart 4/5 Intricate beat, short song. Nice, and tops some other songs on the record.
14. Flashback 6/5 Third interlude, about seeing a past lover with their new love and thinking of the past and what could have been. Very relate-able...and should been made a proper track.
15. Is Anybody Listening 6/5 Nice, beautiful song. Ambiguous situation formed by the lyrics allow this song to be related to almost any experience. The melodies and harmonies really connect. Beautiful song.
16 Ain't Going 3/5 Hidden/Bonus. Theme song to their reality show "Making the Band". Similar to the material on their debut. Just average.
All in all, DK has a solid release easily tops their debut in many ways. The vocals, harmonies, and image have all improved. All of the girls are more evenly featured, which is a great accomplishment; all of these girls are talented. Hopefully the sales top the first album and more than two singles are released. This record deserves longevity, and Diddy needs to hold up his end of the deal.
