Free Music Notes for Nightmare RevisitedFree Music Review: Totally different Hit: 2 Stars
First off, I want to point out that this is another colossal failure of Amazon in matching review with product, since none of the previous reviews here actually seem to be about the Nightmare Revisited soundtrack, but just he movie.
Most of the songs (in this album) are just rock covers of the ones from the movie. While I applaud Disney for trying out an idea like this, few of the new recordings can match the witty voices and unique instrumentation from the original soundtrack. You may like this album, but I urge you before you buy it to listen to all the track previews (for instance, on the Walt Disney Records web site).
Free Music Review: What's This What's This Hate? Hit: 2 Stars
What's This is actually my favorite song on this CD by far. "Flyleaf turned the song depressing"-- well yeah that's the whole freakin point of remixes, to experience songs in a different light. I loved the liberty taken there and it's the song that caused me to check out the CD.
Unfortunately, most of the tracks on this take no such liberties and so you're left with mostly uninspired takes on the soundtrack. It's really only worth buying if you're a big fan of most of the bands on the CD or just adore the Nightmare Before Christmas that much.
Free Music Review: Not my favorite cd Hit: 2 Stars
I do not like most of the versions of the songs on this cd. They lack the depth of emotion and the mood of each song. I purchased this for my kids and I believe they will be taking only 2-3 of the songs and mixing them with the other Nightmare Before Christmas albums that we already own.
Free Music Review: A great disappointment, misses the point of the original Hit: 1 Stars
Fortunately, I listened to a friend's CD before purchasing it myself.
I found the production to be flawed because of the heavy use of vocal chorusing and the unpleasant artifacts it created.
The most distressing part of the album is that it misses the key message of the original opera: "it's our job but we're not mean". Instead, vocals of this album were very mean and hostile, taking a wonderful story of the human spirit and distorting into something truly horrific. Instead of a tale of desire, longing, and vulnerability this version gives us something angry, hostile, and aggressive.
For instance, the headbanging delivery of Kidnap the Sandy Claws masks the fact that there are supposed to be three separate vocal lines with distinct personalities behind them. The rendition of Making Christmas also misses the point of the lyrics.
I will gladly admit that the instrumental tracks provide a wonderful and creative interpretation of the originals.
Although it's wonderful to see artists pay tribute to what was certainly a masterwork, this production does not come anywhere close to the original.
Free Music Review: Trash Hit: 1 Stars
Only get if you're a little Goth kiddie who likes any sort of tasteless effort by bands you'd buy t-shirts of at Hot Topic. That said, there are a couple good songs, but combined, that's like 1/4 of the whole album. The best songs are the instrumentals (which aren't as good as songs in their respective genres they're bringing to the table), and Korn, Manson, and Rise Against's renditions of Kidnap the Sandy Claws, This is Halloween, and Making Christmas, respectively. Just download those from Amazon, and don't buy this uninspired, exploitative crap.
