WOW......the audacity of some of these reviewers! Danny Gatton: psychobilly, unpolished, technically limited, not a jazz player, in over his head....
What utter purist dribble.
Danny Gatton was simply one of the most phenomonal guitar virtuosos in recorded history. No single style or genre could contain such an enormous talent. His mixing and blending of many different styles, the nearly unlimited technique, the soulful ability to create deeply touching melodies spontaneously has not been equaled or approached.
This is a superb album that amply displays Danny's fabulous fiery Jazz interpretations.
Disregard the nonsense of those previous reviewers. You may not like Danny Gatton, which is your choice, but to speak derogatorily of this man's music and ability merely shows you to be an ignorant fool.
RIP Danny! Thank you for all the GREAT music!
Relentless Poster
Maryland's Danny Gatton was best known as a rockabilly cat, the man who put blistering guitar licks behind the likes of Robert Gordon, Billy Hancock and Delbert McClinton. Like his heroes Les Paul, Lenny Breau and Hank Garland, however, Gatton is both a country picker and a solid jazz man; he stole the show on a Blue Note jam session with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove on New York Stories in '92. Gatton kept both careers going at once; Cruisin' Deuces (1993) was a rockabilly outing, while his duet album with Philadelphia organist Joey DeFrancesco, "Relentless," is a straightahead jazz project. One pursuit reinforces the other; Gatton's jazz playing brings a harmonic sophistication to his rockabilly work, and his country experience gives his jazz solos a dramatic flair. --Geoffrey HimesBlues Music CDs
