To say Darius Rucker is new to country would be a slight, he grew up in the South and has cut his share of country tinged material, just take a listen to Scattered, Smothered and Covered to hear Rucker's excellent baritone in full bloom -- the guy can sing. And it is a wonderful thing to know that the material stands up to his earnest delivery.
Rucker approached the material by gathering a gaggle of current country mainstays to lend their talents, Brad Paisley's paw prints are all over, "All I Want" and that's a good thing. "Forever Road" carries the same weight of a great chorus (that you can sing along with) and a catchy hook that could get a bite from a fish without bait. But the stomper goes to "Drinkin' and Dialin'."
The ballads are the selling point here, Rucker's voice sells them. Rightfully so, he's clear in the mix, he sounds sincere on songs such as "History in the Making," and "Don't Think I Don't Know." A standout track is the contemplative "If I Had Wings," it could have been too cloying, too schmaltzy, but Rucker's voice won't allow it to be, but credit also belongs to Vince Gill and Alison Krauss for their amazing backing vocals.
An excellent pop-country disc that will get its share of radio play, and rightfully so.
Free Music Review: Wow Hit: 5 Stars
I am truly amazed at how great this CD is. When I heard that Darius Rucker was making the switch to country music, I was not thinking it would be a successful venture; however, 1 listen to this CD changed it. It is as though he has ALWAYS been in country music. This CD is just awesome...every single song on here is hit worthy. It really is "that" good. He has a great voice for county and this is just truly a great fit for him. I have recommended this CD to everyone I know that enjoys country music. The great thing is that all his songs are relatable...It Won't be Like this For Long is a reminder to anyone that has kids just how fast time flies by and "Alright" is a great feel good song. That said, my favorite song on here is "I Hope They Get to Me in Time". I cannot wait to see the video for this one...it is a real tearjerker.
Bottom line, GREAT CD!!!!!! You WILL NOT be wasting your money on this one.
Free Music Review: Darius' style transcends all boundaries--don't be afraid Hit: 5 Stars
To be honest, I was afraid of this cd, because i do NOT care for country music, at all. And further, I am not a huge fan of Hootie and the Blowfish, even though I have seen them in concert twice. So why the hell did I buy it? Because I am a major Darius Rucker fan! His voice, his style, his energy--he is just amazing, and I thoroughly enjoy HIM. Hootie always sounded country to me (I am by nature a rasta/blues girl), and this has just the same feel to it. OK, maybe a few more slide guitars and fiddles, but also some beautiful string arangements. Excellent story telling, beautiful vocals, and just enough country sound, without going overboard (for me). I will say, that if any of these songs were done by some nasaly twangy guy, it would not be doable for me--but Darius just has his own style, and it works for a non country person like me. Darius Rocks! Love you Darius--your style transcends all boundaries! Thanks!
Free Music Review: Love Hootie....Love Darius Rucker even more...Great CD!! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been buying stuff from Amazon for about 8 years, but this is my first review. I guess I'm just too lazy to write my own review -- I've relied on everyone else's feedback to validate my purchase decisions.
Well, this CD is amazing - pure and simple. Great music, great vocals -- Darius Rucker is the real deal! I was listening to this CD in my car when I was driving home the other day, and the music just took me away from all the traffic I was fighting.
If you read the inside flap of this CD, you'll discover that this CD was a true labor of love for Darius. When he sang with Hootie, I loved his voice and Hootie's music really complimented his singing. Well, on this CD, it is all Darius -- right down to his country roots.
Bottom Line: buy this CD if you love his voice!
Free Music Review: Absolutely fantastic Hit: 5 Stars
I haven't felt compelled to write a review of a music album since Miranda Lambert's debut (which I wore out.) When I heard that Darius Rucker was working on a country album, I was cautiously optimistic. He has such and incredible sound to his vocal talent .. but another 'cross over' country artist?
When the single for "Don't Think I Think About It" came out, I was excited. It's a good song. But the album blows that single away. Forever Road reminds me of some of Keith Urban's work. It's by far my favorite on the album (it's a happy song.) The bonus song to his mother "I Wanna Thank You" puts me in tears, along with "It Won't Be Like This For Long".
This album is fantastic! Thank you Darius Rucker!
