Free Music Review: Good metal, but that's about it

Out of all the metal albums I own, I like this one the least out of all the albums I like. Maybe this is my complete lack of knowledge of the genre, or maybe the fact the whole Melodic death metal thing doesn't appeal to me that much. But no matter what genre it is, even a rank newbie can like stuff like this. Dark Tranquility is a good band and this is a good album, period. Sure, it isn't my favorite and never will be, but what do I care?
You won't find much in this review. Some of the music on here isn't that interesting. My main problem is the covers, which don't really add to anything, and all but two of them bite (mostly because I don't like original material or band, or the vocal styles are totally different and sound awful). It definitely doesn't exactly blow my mind, but the genre really never did. And some of the "evil" guitar riffs on here are downright silly sounding, basically because of how calculated, slow, they just sound cheesy. Unlike Dissection, who play rather fast and have an icy, cold feel (Storm Of The Lights Bane kills this album no matter what genre it is in or mixed with). Other than a couple of bland moments, there really isn't much fundamentally wrong with the music. I haven't the slightest clue what the lyrics are, and to be honest, I don't really care. Also, this guy's scream is hilarious, and that's in a negative way.
This album is quite heavy actually, which gives it a great wall of sound that metal pretty much needs to have most of the time (at least some form of it is a must, though it will vary). The female vocals are great as well, and when they add mellow parts, that's when they hit gold. The acoustic piece toward the end is hardly cheesy. And I must give some praise to the bass lines, as there is a subtle hint of awesome melodies. Other than those quirks, it gives out some good playing, period. Good musicianship, some great atmopshere, good metal overall. Who can complain?
Even if you don't like it, you get an awesome looking drink coaster in a great looking case that has an awesome artwork (heck, I thought to myself when I got it "If I don't like it, at least I have the cover art). So buy it now just to have an awesome piece of artwork in the form of an album cover.
