Free Music Notes for Dark Was the NightFree Music Review: Intro to the Best Indie Artists Hit: 5 Stars
This cd is great for anyone new to the "indie" scene and are interested in getting to know the more mainstream current of Indie artists out there. It is also a great selection of songs for "hipsters" who already currently live and thrive off the melodies of these artists. The Compilation includes songs from well known artists like: Arcade Fire, Feist, Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, ect. As well as those secret Gems: Yeasayer, The Books,The Decemberists. I particularly fell in love with
1. Knotty Pine (Dirty Projectors and David Byrne)
2. Cello Song - Nick Drake (The Books and Jose Gonzalez)
5. Deep Blue Sea (Grizzly Bear)
6. So Far Around The Bend (The National and Nico Muhly)
7. Tightrope (Yeasayer)
11. Big Red Machine (Justin Vernon and Aaron Dessner)
The first CD of the set is on constant rotation in my car.
Highly recommended for those who like soulful and unique compositions.
Free Music Review: Pick Your Own Favorites Hit: 5 Stars
I agree with those reviewers who state that many tracks are just ok and that everyone will have their own favorties. I will add to that a bit of disappointment that most of the artists did not take the opportunity to try out a very different style (Sufjan Stevens and Blonde Redhead are notable exceptions). However, I think the album is deserving of 5 stars because so many different artists are represented over two discs, with exclusive tracks, and everyone will find things to love here, depending on which artists they like best. The Red, Hot compilations have a long and admirable history and record, not an easy feat in the world of compilations. Kudos to them. On intial listening, my favorites are the tracks by Sufjan Stevens (a ten minute opus!), Blonde Redhead/Devastations, Andrew Bird, Yo La Tengo, Books/Jose Gonzalez, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, and Grizzly Bear/Feist.
Free Music Review: Panoramic Survey of the Best in Indie Rock/Folk Hit: 5 Stars
Besides the fact that purchasing this CD contributes to heightened AIDS awareness and safe sex education in the world, the music itself is exquisite. If you are new to independent music, you will get an apt sampling of some of the best. If you've been following these artists for years and love their music, these exclusive tracks will make you tingle with even more love for artists and groups such as Yeasayer, Sufjan Stevens, Grizzly Bear, Stuart Murdoch, Beirut, etc.
As a DJ for an independent music radio station, I fully encourage you to make the purchase. You won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Indie Rock Smorgasbord Hit: 5 Stars
This is one heck of a compilation, at a price that makes you feel like you're stealing from AIDS victims rather than helping them with your purchase. Twelve bucks for thirty songs? That's what I'm talkin' about.
And they're all GOOD SONGS. It's unbelievable! There's not a single song that induces a mandatory press of the "next track, please" button on the CD player. A couple of my personal favorites: "Sleepless" by the Decemberists and "You Are the Blood" by Sufjan Stevens, both long, beautiful numbers (seven and ten minutes, respectively).
Free Music Review: A wonderful representation of my favorite Indie niche Hit: 5 Stars
This is a brilliant compilation of what I feel is the best of indie rock since 2007. It's like somebody put my ipod on shuffle and made an album. While people might feel a few key bands/artists are missing, this cd set does a fabulous job representing the slower side of indie rock. Beautiful duets, and a handful of standout songs carry a few lesser tunes, but this is a must have in 2009!!!!!!!!!
