Free Music Notes for Dark Was the Night

Free Music Review: nothin' a little speed couldn't help
Hit: 3 Stars

These slow to midtempo numbers eventually lead you down a bored alley. Probably could have compressed the better songs down to one cd and then you'd have something. Enough great artists here to keep it interesting (Buck 65, Feist, Conor Oberst, Cat Power, The Books, New Pornographers...); enough not so great folks here to remain uninteresting (Bon Iver, The National, Andrew Bird, My Morning Jacket, Antony...). As with most compilations, worth some of the songs. You might choose "Red Hot + Riot: The Music and Spirit of Fela Kuti" for a more complete comp.

Free Music Review: Not perfect but....
Hit: 3 Stars

has some great songs. Standouts are from Feist, Grizzly Bear, and Yeasayer. Pretty much a bargain at this price for this much music.

Free Music Review: Could have been great
Hit: 2 Stars

The latest Red + Hot compilation set, "Dark Was The Night" could be seen as a greatest hits package from the Who's Who amongst Alt-rock, Class of '09. All of your current indie rock favorites are on this two-disc set, ranging from Bon Iver to Yeasayer. Of the 31 tracks that comprise, "Dark Was The Night," I can definitely say there were some early favorites. There were artists that I don't necessarily care for so I would skip their tracks, which I guess isn't fair but I did attempt to listen to them.

This set is consistent, and I found myself listening to other musicians that I previously ignored such as The Decemberists. Yeah, I guess that means I'm lame because I'm late to the Decemberist's party. If I had to pick some of the stronger tracks on this recording, I would mention the following: Grizzly Bear, The National, Antony with Bryce Dessner, Iron and Wine, Yo La Tengo, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Stuart Murdoch, Andrew Bird and Cat Power.

Check out "Dark Was The Night" if you're into great causes and great tunes. Buy it, shuffle it around and make your own playlist with these songs and enjoy.

Free Music Review: But for the Yeasayer...
Hit: 2 Stars

Wholly unimpressed with the offerings on this CD save the studio version of Tightrope by Yeasayer. However, I would recommend purchasing it anyway because it supports a good cause and for that one song.

Free Music Review: Not what I thought
Hit: 2 Stars

I felt it did not represent the best music or best artists in the field of independent music. I also did not appreciate the slogan they used "play safe".
