Free Music Notes for The Tension And The SparkFree Music Review: UNEXPECTED AND 5 Stars
From the first time i heard "To The Moon And Back" i knew there was something special about Darren Hayes-with or without Savage Garden. The SPIN album had it's moments, but i was disapointed. Although it did contain,"Insatiable", hands down the best love song ever, i felt like Darren Hayes was capable of better. Upon receiving The Tension and The Spark, I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! I've had it for a week and i can't get over how flawless and percectly crafted this album is. I love electronic music, but it can be cold. But with Darren's beautiful vocals and deep, deep lyrics this album warms my heart. That's the best way i can describe it. This is my favorite album in years. And I can't remember the last time an album affected me as much as this did. I can relate to it whole heartatly, as i'm sure many will. Yes, it's dark, but at the same time it makes you feel really good. There are so many standout tracks here. "dublin sky" and "feel" are beautiful ballads-(can you expect anything less from the man who brought you truly, madly, deeply?)--"darkness" is haunting and maybe the best song on the album. Are you ready to dance?--no problem with that here. "hero", "i like the way", "popular" definetely get you going. and for those of you that miss Savage Garden, take a listen to "Love & Attraction"- it sounds very similar to "tears of Pearls" from the first SG album. and we all remember how hot that song was. do yourselves a favor and get this cd. this is what great music is about. the emotions of the good and bad in our lives- and everything in between.
Free Music Review: A must have for music lovers Hit: 5 Stars
I had heard, and read, very good reviews for this album. And since mr. hayes had released a couple of nice songs in the past, and his voice is one of my favorites, i thought i should give this, his second solo album, a try.
First of all, he's brand new. It seems like he threw away part of his pop side, very dominant on spin, and he gives himself to us in a more inner side. A side which is very dark, very sexy and very, very meaningful. Forget all the i knew i loved or truly madly deeply pseudosorrow songs. These songs are pule melancholy, a strong stub right on the soul. He talks the language of people that have been in very rough situations, not only physically, but mentally as well.
His sound is rough, almost raw, with strange beats and dark tunes. Whats a surprise though, is that in all that darkness, all it takes is a change of the tempo, or the words, and the song suddenly becomes more optimistic, giving you the feeling that there's still hope for what you may desire. Another surprise was the fact that there are even better songs than the ones being promoted so far. His lyrics are right from his inner depths. He has put his soul onto the paper, he has shared his own experiences with us and he eventually made an album that it's not entirely for his fans, but for the fans of music.
If you like to listen to good music, music that makes you feel, then this is the album for you.

Most people hear the name Darren Hayes and cringe. Or, they need to remember he was the lead singer of Savage Garden and THEN cringe. I am not one of those people...although I know there are many out there. I have been a huge fan of Darren's from the beginning, but even a fan like me is able to distinguish between the man he was a few years ago, and the man he is now. One listen to The Tension and the Spark, and its easy to see his growth. This album is definitely his most outwardly personal material he's ever written, and it is so raw at times, its hard to take. Gone are the sugary pop songs, and in place of them is something of real substance. Vocally, Hayes sounds as amazing, if not better, than he always does, and lyrically, he is pure brilliance. He has laid all of his demons out on the table and gotten down to the very core of himself. It is a record that can be easily identified with because he is so blunt, not trying to hide pain or sadness, but pushing it infront of your face. Yes, there are still some pure "Darren Hayes Pop Music" moments within songs such as "Pop!ular", but even there, it is a more mature sounding Hayes. Darren has ditched his falsetto in most cases and replaced it with a sexy, more organic sound. Im sure that even people who say they hate Darren Hayes' music will appreciate this album. Its hard not to fall for his sound.
Free Music Review: A journey out of darkness.... Hit: 5 Stars
If you think you know this artist... think again. Now and then an album breaks the surface of your complacency and rattles your beliefs and shakes up everything you've previously held true... and this is such an album. Darren Hayes is not a "new" artist. And yet everything he does on this album IS new. It's electronic in inception...but not the chilly Euro-tech sort of electronic you may have come to associate with that term... organic in performance (you may not recognise the name but you'll certainly recognise the voice) and unexpected in sound. All the melodic turns and flourishes you might remember from his previous work are still there, and all the lyrical depth... and more. Above all, this is a work of brutal honesty, intensely personal, inward-focused...about the contrast between the light in our lives and the dark that sometimes swallows it. Not an easy listen. In fact, there are parts that will test your tolerance, break your heart, and leave you questioning the very nature of happiness. Illusion? Disillusion? Impossibility? You'll be surprised, and reassured, by the end.
So, after all that... how does it SOUND? Like the album Darren Hayes was always meant to make. Which is to say... like nothing you've ever heard before!
Free Music Review: Darren's best album to date. Hit: 5 Stars
When Darren Hayes went solo, I was heartbroken because Savage Garden had disbanded...but nevertheless excited that Darren would continue to do music. "Spin" was a great first effort, which still had some of that old Savage Garden sound and charm. I loved it and thought he couldn't top it. Then "Tension and the Spark" came out. I am also upset that it's not released yet to the USA, and I wound up shelling out the extra bucks anyway for it because I couldn't wait. The first time I heard it, I was like "Eh...oh well." I didn't think much of it easier. But with everytime I heard it, the album got better and better. I listen to it almost everyday. Each song is absolute perfection..."Darkness", "Ego", "Light", "Unlovable" and "Dublin Sky" are my absolute favorites, even though all of the others are equally masterful. Darren reaches new emotional depth in his lyrics...much darker and more personal than his previous work, it's almost like he's baring his soul to us.
I hope that he does release it to the USA, but then again I hope he doesn't because it makes us want it more now that we can't buy it just yet. I highly recommend this album to everyone who loves beautiful music with an edge. Go buy this today!
