Free Music Notes for The Tension And The Spark

Free Music Review: Beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

Every single song is fantastic on this album. My favourite songs are 'Darkness', 'I like the way', 'Unlovable' and 'Ego'.
This album is the reason why I am a huge fan of Darren Hayes now. However don't listen to this album expecting to hear typical radio-friendly pop music. It is a different approach compared to his first solo album 'Spin', but I will assure you that it is definetely the better approach.

Free Music Review: where there's a spark...
Hit: 5 Stars

...there's a man who's found himself and his own brilliant uniqueness. This body of work is OUTSTANDING!!! The music has punch, the lyrics have bite and a raw-ness and realness that not many can pull off convincingly; there's heart-wrenching beauty sandwiched in between and every single track is delivered perfectly and with absolute mastery. Every single track is flawless-no exaggeration, (you'll know what I mean when you hear it) and each will command nothing less than your full attention and will transport you to a whole other plane. GET THIS RIGHT NOW!!! Anyone and everyone must love this-heck, even you straight guys, so people, go buy it NOW-GO! GO!! GO!!!
For a dance in the dark, go straight to the title track, then Pop!ular, #6 and #11. For a hint of a Depeche-Mode-Personal-Jesus moment, go to I Forgive You. For the heart-wrenching beauty mentioned earlier, go to Dublin Sky-this track will move you to make Darren a big mug of the best hot chocolate and wrap him up in a cuddley wool/alpaca blanket (hand-knitted of course) to make him feel better, bless. Void has a similar effect. Feel is the tender-ish (that's a word!) one with the drums borrowed from Kate Bush or Peter Gabriel-or both.
If you're expecting more Savage Gardenry, as good as they were, this, is on a totally HIGHER ECHELON-this easily outstrips everything Darren Hayes has EVER done-including the gems of Savage Garden.
Every song has a beginning, middle and end; and, in more good news, lyrics are included!
The photo on the back of the case is just begging for a caption...You'll see what I mean when you get it-which'll be right now-GO!!
Eagerly awaiting DH's next chapter. Wonder if he's any good live...?

Free Music Review: Decent Sequel
Hit: 3 Stars

I was blown away by Darren Hayes' debut solo album "Spin" with it's beautiful melodies and super vocals, so it's no surprise that my expectations for his follow up album were very high. Upon my first few listens to "The Tension And The Spark," I didn't know what to think. I liked some of the tunes but the album seemed a lot darker. "Darkness," the first track, was certainly the right tune to set the mood. The lyrics were also darker; much less poppy and much more mystery. Is that a good thing? Not neccesarily. Although I admire Hayes' ambition to reach out on a deeper note, I think that is also part of the reason this album is inferior to "Spin" and adds a touch of awkwardness at times. Upon repeated listens, the album grew on me more. Not necessarily because of the lyrics, but the tunes and beats were extremely catchy. Hayes still demonstrates outstanding vocals and some of the tunes are great listens. My favorites this time around are "Hero," "Darkness," and "I Like The Way." The punchy music to these tunes sound great and these songs are where you'll find Hayes at the top of his game. This is indeed an interesting album and well worth some listens. Some of these tunes will get stuck in your head. "The Tension And The Spark" is a decent follow up to the insatiable "Spin" album. I'll be looking very forward to Hayes' third.

Free Music Review: Simply Brilliant.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have been a fan of Darren's from the time Savage Garden hit it big with "I Want You" here in the States, and I have never looked back. Darren's voice was always the first thing that impressed me and it still this day is one of only two male voices that can give me chills. Next is his lyrics. Only one word can be used to describe Darren's gifted way of playing with words, and that is: Brilliant. Now, I have the two albums of Savage Garden's, "Affirmation" being the one I prefer out of the two, and I also have Darren's two solo records, obviously...I prefer "The Tension and the Spark" as compared to "Spin". "Spin" sounded to...too...safe. And even Darren himself has stated that his heart wasn't in it while doing that album, and you can tell. With The Tension and the Spark you see Darren "The Artist" emerge triumphantly. Lyrically. Musically. Artistically. This album has it all. He took a risk and it paid off. The electronica infused music and the deeply personal lyrics makes for amazingly delicious ear candy. I've had this cd since its release and I must say it is still so refreshing to listen to, compared to all the garbage on the radio today this is a breath of fresh air. It reminds me of Madonna's "Ray of Light". 1.)It signifies his personal break from what people were used to hearing from him and shows that he has real artistic integrety, and 2.) Like ROL each song sounds so different and fresh even years after its release. His heart went into this album and he succeeded in making a record that anyone and everyone can relate to. A bit of information you guys might find interesting, Darren personally financed this cd himself. The money came directly from his own pocket. And now Darren's working on a new Album and I cannot wait to hear what he has instore for us this time around. A DEFINIOTE MUST HAVE for anyone who loves genuinely great music! Highly recommended!

Much love and light!
