Free Music Review: Finding Oneself Musically At A Strange Time

Daryl Hall's solo career in the 80's was not to everyone's taste because he was constantly riding the curtails of his work with John Oates. Following their less than commercially successful Change of Season Hall charged back out on his own with an album where,as he had at the beginning of the 80's with Oates,decided to not be so self conscious about the different between following his creative muse and being commercial and just settle into making an overall excellent album of high quality songs with equally high quality musical ideas. And that says a lot because not only was he using mostly unknown musicians for the sessions but was also recording during a time when anyone trying to become successful in either rock or R&B were being backed into some very serious corners.
Now in all honest this album does borrow a lot from the shuffling hip-hop beats that were almost mandatory in contempory R&B at the time but all the same it was really very wonderful to hear Hall following the lead of the direction that R&B and soul were going at the time instead of resorting to some of the AOR clishes that latter day Hall & Oates would wind up doing-which showcased his respect for his roots wasn't merely a fluke to become successful. Much of the album has a similar kind of ebb and flow,featuring moody and jazzy melodies on songs such as "Power Of Seduction" and other excellent songs such as "I'm In A Philly Mood" and "Love Revelation"-those being a few strong stand outs on this album. "Money Changes Everything" finds a strong,more uptempo variation on this sound.
But my favorite number here has to be "Stop Loving Me,Stop Loving You" finds Hall not only ably covering Marvin Gayes itself less than well known hit from his Here My Dear but also expands on it with a refrain of his own-showing that his ability to adapt other peoples songs to his style is as alive and kicking as it was when he was covering the Righteous Brothers 13 years earlier. Also this was the first version of the song I heard as it was actually played on the radio a lot when it came out. "Borderline" is another song that has a strong Marvin Gaye like feel to it as well. This is one of Hall's most consistant and enjoyable solo releases and plays out more as a full on album as opposed to anything designed as a showcase for hit singles. Obviously the contemporary music of the day did have a strong impact on Hall yet all the same he managed to channel it in a way that was very musically appealing and unlike a lot from his era this album's sound has held up extremely well in the years since it was released. In all honesty it speaks to Hall as someone who,despite the contrary opinion is someone who is respectful to his creative muse and doesn't need popular acclaim to be creatively relevent.
