Free Music Review: Insanely Under-rated
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll admit that I'm a hardcore fan of Chris Carrabba, but I don't understand the intense scrutiny this album is receiving here. I'll admit that it is somewhat annoying that the actual musicians are barely audible, if singing at all, on a few of the opening tracks, but the actual music qaulity is unsurpassed. Delicate, intuitive, deliberate. Perfect Dashboard Confessions are within this disk, yet so many of the reviewers here overlook the amazing musical talent, soothing voice, and flawless performance by the band.

Taking a cue from Nine Inch Nails, Dashboard Confessional's front man Chris Carrabba refrained from naming the group solely after himself, choosing instead to base their name of one of the group's songs, "The Sharp Hint of New Tears." The band doesn't play an aggressive, loud rock, but a softer style of prose, poetry and guitar chords.

Following their typical pattern, the band's live performance on this disk does not disappoint me in the slightest- Each chord is flawless, each vocal fluctuation intentional and well-positioned in the song. The disk compiles songs off of "The Places You've Come to Fear the Most," two of the group's LP's, and their debut, "Swiss Army Romance." With each song comes a new, fragile display of a very human emotion. NO band captures raw emotion better than Dashboard Confessional, and each song shows the ever-evolving maturity and thought that goes into each song. Their music isn't just ear candy, it's more like soul syrup. They coat every human emotion in a pure, easygoing musical style. Never too loud, but potent enough to stay in your mind.

I think you should be acquainted with the band before buying this album, but to me, it's essential to any true fan. I'm not disappointed in the slightest with this disk- I think if you can enjoy or at least ignore the audience, you'll see that this is an incredible compilation of music, essential to any soft rock collection.

Mtv Unplugged (Bonus Dvd) Poster

The MTV Unplugged concept was probably invented with someone like Florida singer-songwriter Chris Carrabba (a.k.a. Dashboard Confessional) in mind. Carrabba's relentlessly sad, impossibly frail acoustic songs--which effectively spawned the emo-core genre--have given alienated, cardigan-wearing guys and gals a snappy soundtrack to their pain. Dropping the heavily-inked guitarist amid his flock captures both the intimacy and awkwardness propelling Dashboard Confessional's best songs. Indeed, whether Carrabba is flying solo or is joined by a band, his MTV Unplugged--presented as a CD with an accompanying DVD--ranks as one of the most interactive sets ever; the fans know every single word to every single song and gosh darn if they don't sing their hearts out, sometimes completely hijacking the choruses. From opening number "Swiss Army Romance" through to the modern-rock hit "Screaming Infidelities," the assembled holler themselves hoarse in a glassy-eyed solidarity that would be eerie if it weren't so sweet. The sing-along aspect might be a drawback for fans searching for pristine live versions of studio recordings, but then again, Dashboard Confessional?s music is nothing if not communal. --Kim Hughes
