Free Music Notes for Time OutFree Music Review: One of the best albums I've ever owned Hit: 5 Stars
As a newcomer to the world of jazz, I was looking for a selection of CDs from which to start my exploration of this great music. Without exception, every long-time listener I asked recommended the Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out (that and Miles Davis' Kind of Blue- but that's another review). Am I ever glad I took those recommendations! This album is at once one of the most challenging, yet most easily accessable to the jazz neophyte I have encountered. The odd time signatures at first seem challenging, but soon you can't get the rythm out of your head. Although the "Rondo" and "Take Five" get most of the attention, I found myself enthralled by the alternating 3/4 and 4/4 found in "Three to Get Ready". My favorite aspect of this album would have to be the rythm section of the quartet. Although I cannot praise the work of Brubeck and Desmond enough, Wright and Morello provide a rock solid base that anchors the listener to the odd time signatures used throughout the album. This is definately one of the best music purchases I've ever made. If, like me, you are just beginning to listen to jazz, be sure to add this album to your list of ones to try!
Free Music Review: The Album That Put Dave Brubeck On The Map Hit: 5 Stars
Dave Brubeck Quartet's "Time Out" is a classic jazz recording and anyone who appreciates jazz needs this gem in their collection.
The year 1959 proved to a big year for jazz having produced many of the genre's most important releases like Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue," Charles Mingus' "Mingus Ah Um," Bill Evans' "Portrait In Jazz," and John Coltrane's "Giant Steps." This year also proved that the Dave Brubeck Quartet were force to be reckoned with.
Employing odd time signatures and ethnic timbres not widely used in jazz at the time, "Time Out" proved to be a groundbreaking success. To Columbia Record's surprise "Time Out" spawned a hit single "Take Five" and it was ranked #2 on the Billboard charts.
All of the elements that made this group great are in place on "Time Out," but it is my strong opinion that they made plenty of records that were just as good as this one. I would challenge anyone who's interested in this quartet to explore his other work with Paul Desmond. You will quite surprised.
This is a classic album that is without a doubt recommended, not just by me, but the other 171 people who gave it 5-stars.
Free Music Review: Just saw Dave Brubeck Quartet Yesterday!!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Didn't know where to put this, but my wife and I attended "A celebration of the Sacred" at Immaculate Conception Church in Cranston, RI yesterday with none other than Dave Brubeck and the quartet, Bob Militello on alto sax and flute, Michael Moore on Bass, Randy Jones on drums. Dave turns 89 today and he is off to the Kennedy Center in DC to receive a Lifetime Achievment award. The program will be broadcast on December 29 (PBS???.don't know). In any event, Dave and his crew were just fantastic and the program was 2:30 in length with about 1,000 in attendance celbrating the opening of a new school by his great buddy, Father Ronald Brassard, the pastor. Half of the program was most of Dave's old standards, including some Chopin he played on a trip to Poland for Pres Eisenhower as a tour of Eastern Bloc Countries. He still has the old touch. If you can Google the church, you might be able to get a copy of the program from Fr. Brassard. (P.S. Send him a donation..my recommendation..not his)
Sorry to interrupt your review of this album, but I think I just died and went to heaven last night and wanted to share this info somewhere.
Free Music Review: Brubeck and Beyond Hit: 5 Stars
Of course this is one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. What's sad to me is that people stop here. They get Time Out and Kind of Blue by Miles Davis and don't pick up another jazz CD. But there are dozens of amazing albums by both these artists, not to mention several hundred truly great jazz albums by other artists if you take the time to explore.
But if you like Time Out you might also enjoy these others by Brubeck:
The Great Concerts - A high-energy live collection, Time Further Out - expanding on the time theme, Jazz Impressions of Eurasia and Jazz Impressions of Japan - both classics with wonderful tunes, Brubeck Time - Dave's first studio album with Columbia and, believe it or not, Dave Digs Disney - just marvelous, and So What's New - all new compositions from 1997. You can't go wrong with any of these. In fact Dave is still going strong at age 85. He's also amazing in concert.
Even though Time Out, recorded in 1959 (possibley the gratest year for recorded Jazz), is one of the truly great jazz albums, don't stop there. Make it your starting point for a lifetime adventure of listenting to jazz.
Free Music Review: Noticeably different, notably "desert island jazz" item... Hit: 5 Stars
There's a reason "Time Out" has sold gazillions of copies over the past 43 years. It is not just really, really good, but it does have a bit of an edginess...Brubeck and his saxophonist Desmond combined to alter their rhythms just enough so that the listener has a few challenges, yet each selection ends up a pleasing experience for the ear and the brain. "Take Five" is justly famous, "composed" by Desmond and led by him, but the other numbers, while less memorable than that, are plenty good enough. There is a reason why the vast majority of the 87 reviews posted as of today advise that you add this to your collection. Read 10 or 20 of them and you'll get the picture on the cover of the album, as well as the CD inside, as quickly as you can find a way to pay for it. Hear it with earphones and no distractions a few times before you play it for your entire living room. Is it one of the ten best "traditional jazz" CD's out there, or only one of the 20 best? Opinions will differ, but few would ever rate it below the top twenty. All four members of the Quartet get shining moments within this 38 minutes of music.
