Free Music Notes for Dave Chappelle's Block PartyFree Music Review: Dave's Favs a HIT!! Hit: 5 Stars
Great "true" music. If you saw the movie, you know how great the cd is.
Free Music Review: Now THIS is a Block Party!!!! Hit: 4 Stars
Now I'm a huge Dave Chappelle fan. Even when he decided to drop off the face of the earth last year, I still stood behind him. He's a mastermind on stage, in movies, and on television. So the next thing for him to do is to branch out and try new things like his recent movie Dave Chappelle's Block Party. I haven't seen the movie, but it's got be great since the soundtrack is basically the performances from the movie. I heard from one person that saw the movie that the live performances weren't in their entirety. Well, the soundtrack fills the void left from the movie.
Everything from Black Star's "Definition," Dead Prez's certified classic "Hip-Hop," Jill Scott's "Golden" and "The Way," Mos Def with both "Universal Magnetic" and the crossover hit "Umi Says," Talib Kweli's "The Blast," Common's reuniting with Erykah Badu and Bilal for a live extended version of "The Light," Erykah Badu on "Back In The Day," and The Roots reuniting with Erykah Badu and Jill Scott for "You Got Me." The Roots enlist Big Daddy Kane and Kool G. Rap for "Boom" while Black Star give us "Born And Raised," a new song that apparently wasn't included in the film for some reason.
Dave Chappelle's Block Party is a collection of live hits that have helped shape the underground and mainstream Hip-Hop and R&B scene for the last eight years. If you want to take a trip down memory lane with some of the best live instrumentation and lyrics, this is the soundtrack for you.
Free Music Review: The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Hit: 4 Stars
So now that Dave Chappelle has decided he's more fulfilled by artistic expression than by scoring the big bucks (make that the big BIG bucks), it's no surprise that he's working with innovative and forward-looking musicians with the same attitude. Regardless of whether this soundtrack completely represents everyone who played in the movie (it doesn't), what we have here is still a winning collection of the most intriguing artists in neo-soul and alternative rap. A limp krunk opener by Dead Prez gets over pretty quickly, and then we're treated to some impressive live workouts by many different rap/R&B innovators. This goes especially for two of the greatest soul singers we have these days, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, who both deliver several very moving performances, plus great progressive hip hop from the likes of Mos Def and the Roots. The culmination of the block party, or at least this disc, is the Roots, Erykah, and Jilly screaming bloody murder for nine minutes in "You Got Me." Unfortunately, this album deserves some of the criticism it's been getting, including that from other reviewers here. The sound quality is atrocious, and was probably lifted straight from the film mix, and the album closer by Blackstar is a studio track tacked on to this live disc for who knows what reason. And finally, the skits that follow most of the songs, taken from a conference call with Dave and all the stars, are unfunny, uninformative, and mostly useless. [~doomsdayer520~]
Free Music Review: Dave & Friends R Off Da Hee-Zay!!! Hit: 4 Stars
1st off I agree with the reviewer who said it's a shame The Fugees & Kanye did not make the CD, but hey that's why folks can go get the DVD!!! The live performances X-specially of Dead Prez frontin' a Hip-Hop band should open a lot of other rapper's eyez. Ms. Badu, Jilly From Philly, Common, Talib Kwale, Mos Def, Big Daddy Kane (whoa), all made the CD HOT!!!
Hands down without ? the star of the movie & CD is the incredible Roots Band. Fronted by Black Thought with his lethal wordplay, it was amazin' 2 watch them back all these diverse artist & put so much muscle on top of their music. I was in the theater amped, & the CD brought those memories right back.
Anybody who wants 2 know what live Hip-Hop/Neo-Soul/R&B sounds like should pick this up & feel the vybes. & of course Dave's ad-libs take the whole thing completely over the top cause quite simply..., He Is Krazy!!! Anotha shout-out goes 2 the Marching Band from Ohio who put it down nicely in the movie. Those students will remember this event 4 the rest of their lives...
Go C the movie, pick up the CD, & wait 4 the DVD 2 drop so U can get that too... Dave still didn't get that 50 Million yet, so Help A Brotha Man Out!!! HA-HA-HA!!! PEACE & BLESSINGS!!! The Bro J Is G-O-N-E!!!
Free Music Review: If you dig these artists pick up this CD Hit: 4 Stars
First things first, if you enjoy these artist, pick this album up. Jill Scott and Erykah Badu are featured on the set singing several songs and they both team up with The Roots for "You Got Me." Mos Def is also featured on the CD and Common performs the song "The Light." Personally, I didn't dig the CD too much, simply because outside of Jill Scott, Badu and Common these aren't artists I listen to often, not taking anything away from their talent, just not in rotation in my iPod. It's a great CD if you are really into these artists. I missed not hearing more from Common, it would have been great if there were more Common songs on the CD, including some of his recent hits. I was also disapointed that Kanye West nor the Fugees were included on the set even though their performances were in the film. I can only assume this was due to a licensing or rights issue or something. But yeah, if you dig Blackstar, Dead Prez and the artists who did make the cut pick up this album. It's a nice mix of conscious organic hip-hop.
