Free Music Review: A great follow-up.

A great follow-up to "Magic Triangle". Compositions are strong and performances are flawless. Drummer Ben Perowsky really stands out on this recording. Dave Douglas continues to amaze as both a performer and a composer.

Lester Bowie died between the time this album was recorded and released, but the Art Ensemble of Chicago legend seems to live on in Dave Douglas, another trumpeter with irreverence for the solemnity of high art and the walls between musical genres. Leading this quartet (with saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist James Genus, and drummer Ben Perowsky), Douglas displays the sometimes comic, sometimes angry, sometimes dissonant, sometimes singing, sometimes playful, sometimes elegant quality that Bowie perfected. Douglas's 11 compositions all contain a juicy melodic nugget, but surprisingly it's when his trumpet and Potter's tenor sax stretch the harmonies into the most unorthodox intervals that the tunes are most beautiful. The staggered, stop-and-go rhythms often seem on the verge of stumbling, but they never lose their momentum and sustain a delicious taste of tension throughout the disc. --Geoffrey HimesJazz Music CDs
