Free Music Notes for Hourglass (CD/DVD)Free Music Review: Mature, intensive, enthralling - a unique Dave! Hit: 5 Stars
The first three songs on the CD are absolutely awesome: Saw something" is a wonderful electronic ballad that starts really slow and ends with a brilliant climax, so that you only want to close your eyes and let yourself fall into the arms of someone else. It is an excellent song and it has been a long time ago, that I have ever heard a song that really captured my heart like this. The second song Kingdom" is a great dancetrack and is going to be one of these classic songs. Deeper and deeper" is a song where people will have different opinions about: Either you'll hate it or you'll love it. I loved this song from the first tunes. It is smashing, fast, aggressive, evil" and great for dancing.
21 Days" sounds dark, slow and Dave has a real penetrating voice that sounds extremely sexy and which really turns me on. It reminds me a bit of DM Ultra" times. The next song is the ballade Miracles" that starts with an electronic sound layer, followed by Dave's striking slow voice and lyrics pointing out what I think and feel too. Use you" sounds a bit like former DM songs. It's a great dance track, falling in the categorie nasty, evil, sexy and dangerous". Insoluble" is a kind of ingenious ballade starting with strong electro sounds that are really exciting, ambitious and diversified.
Endless" is the most wicked song on this album. I have never heard some tunes like this before. It starts with some electrobeats which sound like the volume is consistently openend and closed. Dave's voice appears in an extremely resound and hypnotic way. I love this song and I am addicted to it. It's wicked, lush, sexy and a good song for DM partys. A little lie" is a wonderfull balade with strong drums and great guitar tones that remind me of very old Simple Minds songs. Down" is a condigned last song on this album.
I have never liked Dave's first album Paper Monster" that much. But this album is different. I am really impressed by the mature Dave and his extremely intense voice, of which I have the impression, that I have never heard it in this perfect quality ever before. The way Dave sings and in addition his lyrics really capture my heart and my soul. I Thank Dave, als well as Andrew Philpott and Christian Eigner, for this excellent work and I hope to hear more music like this in the near future.
The DVD shows the studio sessions of Hourglass, Saw Something, Miracles, Kingdom, Little Lie and Endless. This means more instrumental (drums, guitars and only a piano for Endless) instead of electronic music. Some songs sound completely different, but nevertheless brilliant. Endless for example sounds like a complete new song (apart from the lyrics) and has a complete different tempo compared to the CD Version. Though I love the CD version, this version completely captured my heart by the way Dave sings, the haunting lyrics and the tunes of the piano. It is no waste of money to buy this edition of Hourglass.
The idea to show the handwritten lyrics in the booklet, instead of just printing them as everyone does, is absolutely lovely. Thus the album gets a more individual character.
Free Music Review: Great soothing electronic album Hit: 5 Stars
Like most of you, I am a huge Depeche Mode fan. Their music is a huge part of my life. All of our favorite DM songs were, of course, written by Martin Gore. So, naturally I was a lil' skeptical of a Dave Gahan Solo album. Admittedly, Paper Monsters really didnt do anything for and to this day still comes off as a little uninspired. However, with Hourglass David has really shown growth. This album is fantastic. It is more electronic than Paper Monsters and almost seems like Playing The Angel part II. This is partly because a lot of these songs were written during the recording sessions for PTA, which Dave contributed three songs to. As a whole, this album is very minimalistic and relaxed. Songs like Saw Something, Miracles, and A Little Lie are great memorable songs and really hold up well. I've been listening to this album along side my Depeche Mode cds and I must say that I'm impressed. The real surprise on here is Deeper and Deeper, with Dave's snarling vocals. That song is very heavy in nature, with violent synths and Dave's forceful singing. Great track. Overall, if you love Depeche Mode and want something slightly different but still with a good electronic vibe, I suggest this album. It will definitely age well. As far as the lyrical content, yes it is a very moody somewhat depressing album. Let's face it though, moody depressing music is almost always beautiful. On a personal level I can relate to Dave's lyrics, especially the religious doubt and that makes singing and enjoying the songs so much better. Its always a huge joy to love the music AND be able to relate to the singer's words. I totally recommend this album. It really is great.
P.S. Get the version with the DVD because the studio jams of these songs are so cool and sound different than the album versions as they rock them out with actual bass, guitar, organs, etc. The video for Kingdom is...well...weird. I'd almost say disturbing. You'll see. ;P Enjoy
Free Music Review: Calm Down People Hit: 5 Stars
I realize that many people have mixed views about Dave Gahan's writing ability. I always say keep it simple which is exactly what he does with this album. I am an avid DM fan and have been for years. It's wonderful to see Dave finally take the initiative to write and sing his own songs. I think this is his best work yet. His post somber period has ended. His debut, "Paper Monsters" was a nice effort at breaking away from DM, but "Hourglass" is the bomb! My fave track on this CD so far is "A Little Lie." I am also enamored by "Deeper and Deeper", "Use You", and "21 Days." Of course his release of "Kingdom" and "Saw Something" was on the money, but the aforementioned tracks are his best kept secrets. Well done album. Buy it. You will enjoy it. I give it 5 stars. I love the dark, gritty electronic sound that this album displays. And oh, let's not forget Dave's signature baritone voice. Can't get a better mixture of vocal and sound in one album.
Free Music Review: Wonderful return to serious art Hit: 5 Stars
I have to disagree with anthonious, respectfully. Most artists create their works driven by an emotional state. This is usually a personality trait or a result of emotional issues not impacted greatly by external forces or circumstance.
I am very impressed with this album. Like Playing The Angel it is a return to a more focused DM sound. Although Dave's contributions beyond vocals to most of DM's music has been marginal (through Martin Gore's insistance) Dave really shines here as a songwriter as much as he does as a vocalist. This is a collection of well written songs that will go the distance. Not many singers can pull that off with their solo albums. This is much better than Paper Monsters although I am fond of many of the songs on that album as well.
Now if only my dreams would come true and we could next have a Depeche Mode album with Alan Wilder back in the ranks.... alas.
Free Music Review: Dave improve your voice, YOU CAN DO IT! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is great with five stars, but lacks the true Dave's voice.
I remember when Dave singing "Stragelove88" and for me is the best Dave's voice EVER, "Enjoy the Silence" too but my favorite Depeche song is Stragelove. Martin lose his voice too, for me the best Martin's voice is when singing "A Question Of Lust". Bono the stupid u2 frontman lose his voice in 1997 and he operated his vocal cords to recover the voice and now practice the SONETO exercise just like an OPERA SINGER learned from PAVAROTTI to improve his voice. Dave you have much better voice and you are much better FRONTMAN than Bono and YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR VOICE TOO!!
Some people say that you lose your voice for drugs addiction, you can prove otherwise.
ANYTHING YOU DO TO RECOVER THE AWESOME STRANGELOVE'S VOICE, PLEASE DO IT!!
