Free Music Review: Dave does it BIG!
Hit: 5 Stars

I must say I've been a fan of DM for so long that I cannot remember a time when I wasn't. I was very excited when Dave Gahan did his first solo album PAPER MONSTER and was rewarded with a good cd. I was very excited when I heard he was putting out his second solo album HOURGLASS...and I must say this time? He's blown me away completely. A few of these songs are better than anything DM ever did and whilst I hate comparing the two it's nearly impossible not to. I enjoy seeing the growth he's gone through as a songwriter and this is all the proof that I need to scream that DAVE GAHAN CAN DEFINITELY MAKE IT AS A SOLO ARTIST! No doubt about it. This is the best cd I've gotten since....well since DM did Playing the Angel. And this is better than that. If you haven't bought this cd yet HURRY UP AND GET IT!!!!!!!

Free Music Review: Dave Gahan at his best!
Hit: 5 Stars

Paper Monsters was a great album, this one is even better!!! Dave Gahan at his best! If you ever buy this album, please do yourself a favor and buy the one with the dvd!!! The DVD is just awsome with session of Dave and the band doing live performance of 5 songs. The small interview isnt bad either. I found out that the extra dvd on Paper Monster wasnt a big deal but this time it is a MUST!!!! Songs like Saw Something, Miracles, Endless,Insoluble or Kingdom are just playing in your head again and again... a truly great album by Dave!

Free Music Review: Amazing!
Hit: 5 Stars

Fantastic addition to the DM family album! Dave's voice is still strong (which i was a little worried about), and the tracks kick in a new level of creativity. Great album!

Free Music Review: Great Album!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Dave as a songwriter gets better and better.
And his vocal range is amazing! From the hypnotic rendition of "Saw Something", to the wild "Deeper and Deeper".

Free Music Review: Electronic fans will enjoy, DM/Gahan fans revel.
Hit: 4 Stars

Summary: This is a great album, mainly accessible to those with a penchant for synth/electronically-based music and great vocals. Depeche Mode fans and Gahan fans alike should find this to be a treat!

For those of you that are not familiar with Depeche Mode and/or Dave Gahan, I think anyone who enjoys good vocals can appreciate this album. These songs do a great job of showcasing Dave's emotional and vocal range. He's got an amazing, expressive voice, and that really shines through in this album. Anyone who also has a penchant electronic/synth music should also find this album interesting and enjoyable. There are some very complex and memorable sonic landscapes that are created here. You'll quickly find yourself listening to your personal favorites again and again, finding new sounds and new shades of texture. There's a lot of great singing and music to enjoy, here.

Now, for those of you diehard Depeche Mode (DM) and/or Gahan fans (like myself), this album gives us a lot to think about. Not only does it show Dave and his cohorts progressing as lyricists and songwriters, it also shows us a different side of Dave. There's a lot of self-exploration presented, as well as questions about life, religion, and relationships. I hate to pigeon-hole the topics as "Martin Gore-like", but they truly are highly similar, and there's nothing wrong with that, in my opinion. It may be of value to note that Dave has always found similarities between what Martin Gore writes and his own life struggles/experiences, which may be what has allowed him to sing so perfectly for Depeche. Fans may also notice how incredibly synth this album has become as opposed to the more bluesy-guitar type sounds Dave and cohorts played with on the last album, Paper Monsters. This time, using synth seems to fit better, flow more easily. Maybe that's simply because that's been Dave's musical home. Whatever the reason, it works much better overall than Paper Monsters did. I think this album shows incredible growth, specifically in Dave's confidence in his songwriting and singing. My personal favorites would be the haunting beauty of Saw Something and the banging goth-ness of Deeper and Deeper.

There are parts where I don't feel the songs come together quite as well as DM songs. While I have found a number of songs from this album stick with me, the music doesn't quite have the same immediately memorable, perfectly orchestrated, and soul-touching qualities that I have always found with DM. That may well come with more time, and I'm sure we're all looking forward to that. After all, even Martin Gore struggled in the beginning with his songwriting, and look at how many amazing songs he's produced since!

While I personally found the DVD included in this set to be interesting, informative, and enjoyable (the easter eggs are a treat!) most non-DM/non-Dave fans will likely find it to be superfluous. I highly recommend this album to any and all who are curious, as you will find yourself rewarded with this purchase. Save the DVD-combo for DM fans and collectors.
