Free Music Review: Dave Koz--Sax Extraordinaire
Hit: 5 Stars

This album was recommended by Barry Manilow at his recent concert at Madison Square Garden, Manhattan NYC. Dave Koz did a guest spot at Barry's concert. Dave is apparently an old friend of Barry's and either used to play with Barry or still does. I'm pretty sure I've heard Dave on some of Barry's older songs, like "Brooklyn Blues" and a naughty little song "I Wanna Do It With You". Anyway, this is a great album, with great songs you will most certainly recognize from The Movies (hence, the album title--duh). Dave is a talented sax player (and I've heard plenty of sax players) who includes vocalists in some of the tracks, like Barry Manilow on "Moon River". Absolutely beautiful versions of absolutely beautiful songs with Dave featured in sax solos on each.

This is a collection of mainly slow songs, except for "Pink Panther" which always had an aire of sleuthing mystique about it. These are superb arrangements with full orchestras in the background. This is soft sit-by-the-fire-with-the-wine-and-someone-special mood-musik. 14 tracks, totaling a hair under 1 hour. Highly recommended by this little blonde polish girl. A small booklet is included with the CD, which I honestly haven't read, but there are several pages for those who are interested.

--"Over the Rainbow" (from The Wizard of Oz) begins with a snippit of Judy Garland singing the song, followed by Dave's highlighted sax melody.
--"Moon River" (Breakfast at Tiffany's) features Dave on Sax with Barry Manilow doing the vocal.
--"As Time Goes By" (Casablanca) with vocal by Anita Baker and Ingrid Bergman speaking from the movie at the beginning of the song.
--"Somewhere" (West Side Story) ". . . There's a place for us. . . "
--"The Shadow of Your Smile" (Sandpiper) with vocal by Johnny Mathis.
--"The Pink Panther" (ditto), Henry Mancini's famous song from the movie about Inspector Clousseau (spelling?)
--"The Way We Were" (ditto) with vocal by Vanessa Williams, from the Redford/Streisand movie we all remember.
--"The Summer Knows" (Summer of '42)
--"It Might Be You" (Tootsie)
--"Cinema Paradiso Suite (Cinema Paradiso)
--"A Whole New World" (Aladdin) from the Disney movie, with Donna Summer doing vocal.
--"Schindler's List (ditto)
--repeats "It Might Be You" and "The Shadow of Your Smile" titles, but as instrumentals rather than vocals.

Absolutely beautiful versions of absolutely beautiful songs. Great mood music for your collection. Hey, how can ya go wrong with anything recommended by Barry Manilow!?! That Manilow dude knows beautiful music!

Free Music Review: Pass The Popcorn Please!
Hit: 5 Stars

Dave Koz has created a great salute to songs from the movies that is fresh in it's approach, pays tribue to the songs, and gives them a unque updated vibe.

It kicks off with one of the most famous movie thme songs ever, and considering that Over The Rainbow has been covered by countless singers, it is appropriate that here we have a smooth instrumental cover, with some sampling of Judy Garland. Other songs with a smooth instrumental bent include; The Theme From Schindlers List, Cinema Paradiso Suite, and The Pink Panther. A great feature of this release is that Dave spans the generations. This is not about old movies, new movies, in between movies, it about good music from good movies, of all periods.

The vocal tracks shine in a different light. Anita Baker, Vanessa Williams, and Barry Manilow, all work with Mr. Koz seemlessly, and all lend a vocal class to their reads of these songs.

Speaking of vocal class, and for those of you who follow my reviews, my all time favorite, Donna Summer,
delivers a beautiful, simple, restrained take on A Whole New World. Donna and the artist known for this song, Regina Belle are friends and Regina has covered some of Donna's material in the past. Here Donna returns the favor, and shows many of todays vocalists that you do not have to over-sing to be heard.

Pass the popcorn and enjoy!

Ken

Free Music Review: Favorite jazz cd of all times
Hit: 5 Stars

I have purchased multiple copies of this CD for my homes and for my cars. Each song is outstanding. Dave Koz is a magnificent musician who selected not only the best pieces to personalize but also extremely talented and diverse performers to embellish each song. I listen to the CD daily and never grow tired of it, especially Shadow of Your Smile with Johnny Mathis and Memories with Vanessa Williams. This is a CD that is not only worth purchasing, it is a classic that should be shared with all your friends.

Free Music Review: Dave Koz at The Movies
Hit: 5 Stars

Dave Koz at The Movies is an enjoyable C.D. to listen to if you are a jazz fan as I have been since the late 1950s. Now that my favorite sax player, Gerry Mulligan, has passed on to that "jazz club in the sky" I have elected Dave Koz as his replacement. His sounds are clear, and he blows a sax with what seems no effort at all based on having seen him on T.V. when the artists on this C.D. performed. I would recommend this with a "High-5."

Free Music Review: To quote another movie theme, "Nobody does it better."
Hit: 5 Stars

Somehow, Dave manages to make a number of hoary old movie themes sound fresh again. You've heard these songs a million times, but Dave and his guest vocalists make them well worth listening to. Dave's velvety "The Shadow of Your Smile" with Johnny Mathis is my favorite version ever of that song. I've got it in my car's CD player and I keep hitting repat after numerous listenings. If you love Dave, if you love movie themes, buy this CD. You won't be disappointed.
