Free Music Review: A Different CD for Dave Koz
Hit: 4 Stars

I'm a bit surprised Dave Koz isn't a bigger name in the music world. He's released a number of CD's, which have been well received by his fan base, and his Christmas collection is a delight. Still, he has a limited following. My guess is that with AT THE MOVIES he's trying to broaden his fan base. Sales wise, the CD is selling brisquely, but judging from a few of the Amazon reviews (and the subsequent voting), he may be gaining new fans, but his base may not be all that happy with the recording.

The CD contains familiar music from a variety of films ranging from THE WIZARD OF OZ to ALADIN. The music is well performed though the arrangements are standard and not entirely original. There are some interesting engineering tricks: Judy Garland beginning "Over the Rainbow" and Koz completing it and Ingrid Bergman asking for "As Time Goes By" taken from CASABLANCA. There are guest performers: Anita Baker, Barry Manilow, Vanessa Williams, and Donna Summer to name a few and while none of their performances are loathsome, they're not exactly inspired either, and in some ways that may be a good way to describe the collection as a whole: not bad but not awe inspiring either.

If you are a Dave Koz fan, this may not be the collection you've been waiting for--he didn't compose any of the compositions and the arrangements are closer to easy listening than smooth jazz. If you like film music and are looking for a stress buster or a nice CD of background music, this collection will be more than suitable.

Free Music Review: Music to relax by
Hit: 4 Stars

David Koz and his producer manages a blend of saxaphone jazz theme melodies and pertinent lyrics from memoriable movies creating a fresh sound to old stand-bys. This CD is for easy listening and best reserved for those mornings when you want to relax and when you want to ease into your day or when on a driving trip.

The CD fell a little short of my expectations. Good listening though. A good Sunday afternoon cd.

Free Music Review: Heavy on the schmaltz
Hit: 3 Stars

I am a big fan of Dave Koz and have been for years but I find this new release a bit heavy on the schmaltzy/cheezy side. There is a lot of string laden arrangements which make it very sappy in general. I love the tunes and the guest vocalists are a treat but I just wish it sounded more like it would if he were doing the tunes live (without a huge orchestra behind him.)

Free Music Review: Atrocious
Hit: 2 Stars

I purchased this CD on Dave Koz's and Phil Ramone's reputation alone. I must say this is the WORST CD ever. Dave Koz might be a pretty face, but falls into the same pitfalls as Kenny G...actually I would've rather preferred Kenny G to this nonsense. India.arie, Anita Baker, and Vanessa Williams, artists that I love, just "phone in" their performances. Something that Phil Ramone should remember from doing those Frank Sinatra "Duet" albums. Dave Koz, instead of performing the entire melody of Cinema Paradiso, plays some sort of improv until the last minute or so of the song. Also, Barry Manilow is competent enough to perform to Moon River, and does a good job, but has to fight with the terrible sax solos. Donna Summer tries to do her best, but you feel she is holding back, or that Dave Koz is limiting her to make room for his obnoxious solos. Uugh...bland and terrible. The Pink Panther theme seems to work, but not for the whole 3 and some awful minutes. Steer clear of this one folks.
