Free Music Review: SAXOPHONIC - The Definition of Beautiful

Dave Koz makes happy music. NOBODY makes happy music better than Dave Koz. It's impossible to hear it and not feel good. His music lifts people up like nobody else. SAXOPHONIC is no exception with songs like "Let It Free", "Definition of Beautiful" and "Sounds of the Underground."He also makes music that is sometimes so intense on a heart level that it actually hurts. I don't mean that in a negative way at all. There are times when the emotional experience of music transcends happiness, sadness, love, anger, patriotism, whatever - and it becomes its own emotion. It reaches into your soul and takes you on a journey, and when it's over all you can do is sigh because it takes your breath away. "I Believe", and "A View From Above" (which very coolly, switches gears at the end and becomes happy music too!) are two such songs.
Koz let the sax out of the box on SAXOPHONIC. He followed his instincts over marketing trends. He is aware that there is a next generation of players and listener and gave them something to listen to. But he also knows who the core listeners are and gave most of it to them. Dave Koz is an icon. He doesn't have to prove anything. He could have done the easy thing with this CD and guaranteed its success by plugging in the smooth jazz formula and cranking out a CD where every song on it was a potential radio hit. And it would have been ok to do that. But he didn't. He made enough songs fit the format to make everyone happy, but kept those songs alive and interesting. And then he took some risks; some potentially serious risks. He did the right thing.
Dave Koz's SAXOPHONIC is a beautiful thing; maybe the best one yet!
