Free Music Notes for Old Crest on a New Wave AlbumFree Music Review: You still have to pay the rent Hit: 3 StarsEver wonder why The Kinks were still making records in the 80's? I mean Ray would come up with a really good song every so often but never a complete album. And be honest Kinks fans, Phobia and UK Jive were awful albums. Well, I posed that question to a friend once and he replied, "Well, you still have to pay the rent." As so image the plight of Dave Mason. He's in Traffic in the late 60's and then does a really great solo album, Alone Together. Even scores a hit single off it.You remember, "Only you know and I know." After that he enjoyed maybe three years of celebrity. His voice was pleasant enough, his guitar playing was exquisite, but his lyrics stayed on the surface and sometimes didn't even qualify for that description. He must have been in a big hurry or wasted when he wrote "Baby please, you got me scraping my knees. Baby please, don't send me back in the freeze." So he began his slide into AOR. But he didn't sell out as bad as Rod Stewart did; his voice held together much better and his guitar playing remained pristine and something worth hearing. By the time this album came out, I doubt anyone was paying attention. If heard it for the first time 28 years after its release and I can tell you that it's ok, almost good and nowhere near great. If this was his idea of new wave, well his whole interpretation is to play with a quick tempo. He gives up on that idea around the third song and just gives up regular ol' Dave Mason with some synths here and there. Paul McCartney did a much better job of tipping his hat to the punk/new wave scene with Spin it On. Any who, this is ok.
