Free Music Review: Sweet Redemption
Hit: 5 Stars

Dave Matthews received a lot of trash talk when he and the band decided to scrap the sessions they were working on with longtime producer Steve Lillywhite and put out a poppy, Glen Ballard produced CD that was, well, just not true Dave Matthews music. True, it did spawn a number one hit (their first, actually), and it was a good album for what it was, a pop CD. Don't get me wrong, I loved "Everyday" becuase it was Dave, and there are several really good songs on it, but any Dave fan knew that they had to get back to what they were famous for, long songs, rocking solos and awesome music topped off by Dave's awesome lyrics.
When "Busted Stuff" came out, I was extremely happy to see that many of the songs on "Busted Stuff" came off the largely bootlegged "Lillywhite Sessions," the album they scrapped in order to realease "Everyday." When I listened to the CD, I found that many of the songs were hte same songs, but had been changed. I was a huge fan of "Lillywhite," so to have these songs in a new, improved fashion was excellent.
I love this CD. "Busted Stuff" is a great song. It opens the Cd and lets the listener know that the band has gone back to their roots. The sound is awesome. It has a kind of jazzy, melodic sound to it. Then, "Busted Stuff" rises into what I think is the second best song on the CD. "Grey Street" is an awesome song. It has a perfect, upbeat sound, with lyrics that are packed with emotion. They make it like a slower "Tripping Billies" and then top it off weith emotion unlike anything. It is amazing what Dave has done with this song. I had heard it on "Lillywhite" and thought it was a decent song, but when I heard it on "Busted Stuff" it, to me, became an instant favorite and classic. "Where are you going," the song that's currently released, is a pretty flawless song. I do have to say that it does never go anywhere, but the music and te lyrics are good, but it could have been long and escelated into something more. The next two songs, "You never know" (like "where are you going," was not on "lillywhite") and "Captain," while good, do slow the pace of the CD. It seems to drag becuase these songs never seem to go anywhere. They are good, don't get me wrong, but they could have been better. The CD picks back up with "Raven" and great song filled with great music and lyrics that just reminds you of their older songs, from albums like "Before these Crowded Streets," or "Crash." "Kit Kat Jam" is a fun song as well. It reminds the listener of some of their older songs, but fails to build up towards the CD's climax. Standing alone, this song is great, as is Raven, but they fail to provide a compounding interest towards the climax. These songs, do lead into "Digging a Ditch," which I think is wonderful. It is a great song, with great lyrics and great music to go with it. This song leads into "Big Eyed Fish." This song got me interested in "Lillywhite Sessions." I downloaded it and loved it, despite the depressing lyrics and darker ideas. I loved the "Lillywhite" version and when I listened to this song on "Busted Stuff" I immediately knew that this song was gold. They changed it significantly. The song is about three different stories of people and animals who decide they wnt change, but die trying. The order of the three stories is reveresed from the "Lillywhite" version, but is actually better. The lyrics remaint he same, and the music is better. It fits the song really well. "Digging a Ditch" and "Big Eyed Fish" build up tot he climax of the CD, the ultimate song, "Bartender." Any Dave fan knows that this song has been worked, reworked and worked again. What we end up with is a sweeping epic that no listener won't like. It is strong, powerful and it is musically great. It has an awesome sax intro, and by the end, as Dave yells, and the music hits its emotional peak, you can't help but realize that this band is one of the best bands to come around. "Bartender" is going to be an instant classic.
As a listener of Dave (they are my favorite band), we can't leave out "Everyday." "Everyday" was a great CD. Through Dave's music, we can see him change as a person. "Everyday" was a good CD, and it reflected that Dave was changing. Looking back, you can't help but realize that Dave's songs have gotten darker. "Crash" was a CD of pure happiness in almost all of his songs. Their next album, "Before these Crowded Streets" was more depressing, with songs like "Halloween" where Dave screams in what seems like anger, and songs like "The Dreaming Tree" where he tlaks aobut a person's dreams dying. Then "Everyday" roles around and takes away a lot of the emotion his songs have had. In a way, it is his masking of his problems. He has admitted to being as he called it, a "joyful alcoholic." We can see references to substance abuse all the way back to "Under the Table and dreaming" in "Rhyme and Reason" and "Halloween" was actually an earlier song. In the end, we realize that Dave has changed. "Busted Stuff" is a perfect blend of every CD he has released. It has deep emotion, anger, sadness, confusion, and the happy melodies that made Dave famous. This just might be their best CD ever.
