Free Music Notes for Busted StuffFree Music Review: Lillywhite Redux--The Heart of Busted Hit: 5 Stars
I really anticipated the new DMB album. Being one that heard the songs originally packaged as the stolen "Lillywhite Sessions" and DMB's extensive playing of the songs on tour, I was eager to see the real deal studio version. The album is more refined, yet keeps the raw emotion, energy and acoustic sensibility of the live versions and Lillywhite sessions. The two new additions "Where are you going" and "You never know" are great additions to the mix. "You never know" congers up Beatles acoustic melody, while maintaining the rhythmic complexity that have many memorable DMB songs. "Captain" has more of an R&B flavor than I've heard played live. It changes the song from infinite malady to a more upbeat outlook. The title track is a fuller richer version with the bass filling out the song nicely and "Grey Street" is a good as I ever heard. "Raven" is a shorter and better executed version. "Grace is Gone" is perhaps one of DMB's best songs. It is sped up on this album with a hint of slide/bottle neck guitar. In addition the background vocals on the chorus of "Grace" is great stuff. "Kit Kat Jam" is really a jam with no lyrics in this version, "Digging a Ditch" remains pretty much the same (the longer acoustic intro is great), and "Big Eyed Fish" is updated and starts with a solo guitar line that breaks with the whole band entering. "Bartender" is one of the best tracks. It starts with an Indian flavor holding one chord and explodes with Carter driving the entire song. While there were some weak spots, namely some of the bass lines that were out of place or over-played all in all my anticipation was satisfied and these songs reveal a tighter more intriguing and musically invoking experience than DMB's previous release. The entire album from beginning to end satisfies and challenges musically and lyrically. Most records these days don't.
Free Music Review: Not Perfect, but Still the Best That's Out There Hit: 5 Stars
Although i am not a big Dave Mathews fan, i do have alot of respect for them as a band. The Dave Mathews Band has their own unique style of music and level of creativity unmatchable by most anyone in the contemporary music scene. In an era of derivative rock, Dave Mathews stands out as one of the last original bands out there. True, their stuff is based on Jazz, Blues, Folk, and Rock, but even Elvis based his stuff on blues: all music comes from somewhere. As for enjoying their music from a non-critical level, Busted Stuff is DEFINATELY A GOOD ALBUM.Each track is cleverly crafted, with more of a Goo Goo Dolls type of rock than their popish Everyday or any of their folk/jazz albums before. "Where Are You Going" is almost Black Ballonish with a dash of Dave Mathews style. "Busted Street" is not a strong opening song, but is pleasantly simple."Grace is Gone" is yet another poprock like acoustic ballad that is also enjoyable. But what truly drives Busted Stuff is it's dark side. "Grey Street," the stand out track on the album, delves deep into the soul of Dave Mathews who skillfully uses his voice to portray a rage of emotions.Lyrics like "there's an emptiness inside her, and she'd do anything to fill it in" dominate the tracks portraying the depression, guilt, and sadness felt by the singer after his break up. It is the lyrics and the emotional performance of Dave Mathews that make Busted Stuff something special, and something that everyone should hear. In summary, most people, fan or not, will like atleast 3 songs on this album, most likely 4 or even the whole album.Hardcore fans may find the album an unpleasant departure from tradition. Busted stuff is also a good deal differnt from The Lillywhite Sessions, the previously unreleased prequal to Everyday. If you like rock, folk, or jazz and are lookig for something different and soulful, give Busted Stuff a listen.
Free Music Review: Probably DMB's Most Underrated Work Hit: 5 Stars
Allright before starting off this review I'll give the background story.
These tracks are not the tracks that didn't make "Everyday". Most of them were written before "Everyday" with former producer Steve Lillywhite. However DMB were just not happy about their new album and decided to scrap the work. Dave started working with new producer Glen Ballard, and wrote all new material in a matter of days. When the release of Everyday hit major fans saw the new work as too "poppy" and were desperate to hear the tracks that they had heard from DMB's latest concert tour.
Then a member of a DMB cover band said he had acquired the "Lillywhite Sessions" (aka A Summer So Far) by one of the members of DMB. During that time the sessions landed on the peer to peer sharing system "Napster" and had given the hardcore fans what they had been looking for. Since the official release of "The Lillywhite Sesions" was out of the questions due to Steve Lillywhites personal condalences the band once again headed back into the recording studio, witha new producer, to redo the pre-Everyday works.
Track List for the Lillywhite Sessions:
1)Grace is Gone
2)Grey Street
3)Diggin A Ditch
4)Sweet Up and Down
5)JTR
6)Big Eyed Fish
7)Grace Is Gone
8)Captain
9)Bartender
10)Monkey Man
11)Kit Kat Jam
12)Monkey Man
It is sad that JTR, Monkey Man, and Sweet Up and Down didn't make it on "Busted Stuff" because they are very solid tracks.
Now just to sum it up, Busted Stuff is great. The rediculous expectations that DMB put on themselves after "Before These Crowded Streets" is amazing and very doubtful that they can live up to them. This album is very underrated because of the Lillywhite Sessions but should not be overlooked just based on that fact.
Wonderful album.
Free Music Review: A DMB Fans Opinion On Busted Stuff Hit: 5 Stars
This is the fifth studio release by the Dave Matthews Band and also another masterpiece. This is also the fourth review that I have wrote and the one that I should have wrote in the first place. Let's get to reviewing the album.Busted Stuff- A sad...sexy...very relaxing high quality song. Grey Street- A monumental recording that you are sure to love as long as you can handle the dark and sad elements to the song. Where Are You Going- A beautiful love song that you are sure to love. You Never Know- A monumental recording that you are sure to love. Captain- A very sexy...jazzy...perfect high and lows...high quality song. Raven- A great song that I believe in the first verse is talking about the fact that if you have some dirty buisness to do..you have to do it yourself. And the messes you make...you have to clean up yourself. The second verse I believe is talking about how certain people are given truth or knowledge and then manipulate it or twist it so that it benifits them. A coulple of books specifically are used for those purposes, huh? I only wrote this because some people wrote that they didn't understand the song and this is what I got from it. Grace Is Gone- A beautiful song that you are sure to love if you can take the sadness. Kit Kat Jam- Great song! Very upbeat and an instrumental. Digging A Ditch- Great song! Very thereuptic to listen too. Big Eyed Fish- A monumental recording that you are sure to love. Bartender- A monumental recording that you are sure to love. Hope you buy the album. Jeez I feel like an idiot having all these reviews that no one is probably going to read anyway. But one thing is for sure that you can trust my opinion because I've had four reviews to be very sure. And if by chance you are a Dave Matthews Band fan reading this What's Up! Love is all we need EVERYDAY!
