I'm not a huge Dave Matthews fan (well, not until his more recent solo release), but I picked this up in Best Buy about six months ago, and I love it. Grey Street has become, honestly, six months out from the first listen, my favorite song ever. One of the most fluid, beautiful songs I've ever heard, and a perfect blend of melody, emotion, and lyrics. I don't want to give you a blow by blow review of each song, but some highlights that stuck out to me are: Grace is Gone, a sad, slow, introspective song about a lost (dead?) love. Raven, which is poetic, obscure, introspective, it tells a story. In short everything I love about a song. Big Eyed Fish, where the singer sarcastically bites out his lyrics. The words could be taken as silly, but I think it's a great song. I love his voice! Kit Kat Jam: Short and sweet and jamming. The included dvd is especially worth watching for the incredible drumming sequence at the end. Yes, it's called Dave Matthews BAND, and the drummer rocks! Bartender: Nicely rounds out the album at a not-at-all-boring nine minutes, and Dave Matthew's tortured wailing of the chorus and the fabulous production give me shivers every time. I downloaded some of the Lillywhite sessions songs after my purchase, but wasn't all that impressed to tell you the truth. Maybe because I heard this album first! The lyrics, production, and quality have all really been cleaned up to make a first-rate album. I'm really taken by this album, and this artist in general.
Free Music Review: The Album You've Been Waiting For Hit: 5 Stars
Ever since I first put "Under The Table & Dreaming" in my CD player, I've been hoping and praying that DMB would deliver the knockout album that they've always seemed to be on the cusp on. Their live shows were amazing, their style was unique and their attitude was that of a band on the verge of something great. Sadly, the first 4 DMB albums never fulfilled that promise. Then after "Everyday", possibly their worst album, hope arrived. "The Lillywhite Sessions" appeared online and it seemed that DMB threw away they best album for their worst. While "Lillywhite" was an astonishing album in it's own right, it never was really perfect because it was never finished the way the band wanted it to be. But now, after re-working 9 tracks and adding 2 songs, we have "Busted Stuff" - The Album You've Been Waiting For DMB To Make. From the title track to the epic "Bartender", every song blends perfectly together and makes for a perfect listen. The best 2 songs on the album, "Grey Street" and "Grace Is Gone", perfectly capture everything there is to like about DMB in a way other songs just tell half the story. If you are a skeptic or a jaded ex-fan who never forgave them for "Everyday", just listen to these songs and you will understand why DMB is the most popular band in America. "Busted Stuff" is the Dave Matthews Band's masterpiece - and you should be glad it is with us.
Free Music Review: Shame on all of you "fans"! Hit: 5 Stars
First of, I think this CD is great. I think all of his CD's are great. All of them from UTTAD to Everyday are great. Dave is an amazing musician and it shows. I own Lillywhite Sessions, and at firts I thought they were better than BS, but then BS grew on me and the idea that this is his best CD to date, besides Live at Luther. I am really dissapointed with so called "fans" who keep bashing this CD, calling Dave a sellout and that he has lost his talent. I would like to remind those of you who said this by a quote from George Bernard Shaw: "Those who cannot write, teach!" The same is true with music, if you think Dave has become a sellout and is a talentless fluke then why don't you pick up your own acoustic guitars and make a better record? How 'bout it? You know damn well that even if you had an OUNCE of his talent that you would come up to something close to Everyday. You should all be ashamed with yourselves and the countless bashing of this CD or any other. You have to remember that they were unhappy witht the way the songs came out with Lillywhite, and thought that by remixing with a different producer that they could deliver the songs they way there were meant to be. Lillywhites was a work in progress, and it was the band's decision to re-record them. If you don't like it, tough. But anyways, everyone should atleast give this CD the benefit of the doubt, and they will find that this CD is very enjoyable indeed.
Free Music Review: Renewed love for DMB Hit: 5 Stars
I love Dave Matthews Band. I have for years, and I will continue to do so. BUSTED STUFF reminds me of WHY. DMB was set to release these songs back in 2000 onto a cd supposedly entitled THE SUMMER SO FAR, before it could get completely finished, it was leaked to Napster and by the time the summer tour started in June, a lot of people already had the music in a collection, affectionately dubbed THE LILYWHITE SESSIONS". The music was unpolished and a bit raw. The songs on BUSTED STUFF are far from that. This is the most "together" studio release from the DMB so far. I keep hearing that this cd takes you back to their roots, and I think I would have to agree. Straying back away from the "mainstream pop" feel, the songs on here really flow and you get to feel the band jam and sound truly comfortable again playing together. (listen to "Kit Kat Jam")My favorites on BUSTED STUFF~ ~Grey Street- the lyrics in this one are amazing. "She feels like kicking out all the windows.." Who hasn't had a day like that? ~Captain- this is a song Dave has been playing solo acoustic for years. LWS gave us an unpolished version of this song, however this version absolutely blows me away. It shows the maturity within the band and it's kinda funky too... ~Kit Kat Jam- this song makes me want to dance. Hope it makes you feel the same way. This purchase was well worth it. I listened to it for 3 days straight after buying it.
Free Music Review: Busted Stuff=Good Stuff Hit: 5 Stars
This album started out as "The Summer So Far" which was ultimately scrapped for "Everyday," but made a big splash on the internet titled as "The Lillywhite Sessions." Many of the songs from "The Lillywhite Sessions" were re-worked, and some new ones added ("Where Are You Going" and "You Never Know") to create what is now "Busted Stuff." The CD is great. The tracks are much more polished than in their original incantations and the lyrics added are stunning. Dave keeps up with his theme of inserting political messages into his songs as he has in the past with such greats as "One Sweet World" and "Don't Drink the Water," namely with "Raven," a beautiful song about taking care of the earth. The tracks on "Busted Stuff" are truly entrancing. The album includes a plethera of tones and some of the most beautiful verses ever produced by the band, such as those of "Grace is Gone." "Kit Kat Jam" is a good example of the more upbeat tracks on the CD, it does not have words, but the notes say all that is needed. All in all, this CD delivers what every other CD by the Dave Matthews Band has, a disc with no wasted space. Every track is amazing, such that you can just pop it in without having to worry about skipping over duds. This is a great purchase for those new to the band and seasoned listeners alike.
