Free Music Review: An extreme change of pace, but still welcomed!
Hit: 5 Stars

When you first put in the album, it immediately kicks off with the opening lick of I Did It, played on an electric Baritone guitar. Immediately you know this album is different. This album was intended to be a change of pace for the band. After the fun jams of UTTAD and Crash, the band went into a darker album BTCS, and then with this album they went to a more Rock/Pop theme. Now this is certainly not my favorite DMB album, and it started a chain of 3 albums that were rather disappointing (those being Everyday, Busted Stuff, and Stand Up), before finally going back to the old style with Big Whiskey. Anyway, though this album is different, from the beginning I welcomed the change of pace with open arms. This is not an "everyday" DMB studio session. The songs were written by Dave and the producer without the assistance of the other band members, which means the album lacked the studio collaboration that usually goes on, meaning Dave or another band member plays a riff and the others join in on their respective instruments. This song also leaves out any long songs and sticks to radio friendly, 4 minute tracks. Everyday is the longest track on the album at only 4:44. But still, the album kinda grows on you with time. The older albums had long 8 minute tracks with good jams, but this album is a simple pop album. It attracts new fans with a new style of music. But it still references some older styles of playing. Everyday evolved directly from the old #36 tune from the Red Rocks cd. Angel sounds a lot like Jimi Thing. And the album produced a lot of great live tracks like Everyday, So Right, and What You Are. Moving on to reviews of each individual song:

I Did It - A simple 3:36 minute radio friendly tune. I still to this day enjoy listening to this song. Though Boyd and LeRoi don't have a part on their instruments much, Boyd gets to shine with some vocals for a short section of the song. It is certainly different from any other DMB song that preceded, but it is a great rock song. 7/10

When the World Ends - A song about love, sex, and death (as described by Dave). This is one of my favorites off the album. The lyrics are fantastic. One of those songs you can listen to a bunch of times and it still sounds great. 9/10

Space Between - A very simple guitar riff with lyrics about love. For some reason this song isn't very popular with diehard fans, but I think this song is beautiful. Definitely my favorite on the album. 10/10

Dreams of Our Fathers - This song is rather painful to my ears. I hate to talk harshly about a DMB tune, but this is just not a good song at all. Obviously expressed by the fact that it is the only studio album song to never be played live. Dave's singing is just not very enjoyable here. 2/10

So Right - A great rock song about love. This song sounds fantastic, though the lyrics are kinda cliche One of the songs on the album that actually has a sax solo. 8/10

If I Had It All - A softer song, but very enjoyable. A song about wanting more about life. 7/10

What You Are - This is a fantastic song! It is probably the best live song on the album, and the music is just very powerful. 8/10

Angel - A beautiful love song that just begs to be played at your High School prom. I'm not sure how other fans feel, but the sound reminds me a lot of Jimi Thing. Kinda odd comparison, cause that song is about getting high while this song is about a beautiful girl, but the opening riff actually came from a lick Dave played before Jimi Thing at a live show, and the entire song kinda reminds me of it. This song is just a beautiful piece. I'm disappointed that it didn't last long as a live song. 10/10

Fool to Think - This song is kinda interesting. I didn't really care for it when I first heard it, but it grew on me as many other songs on this album have. This is the other song on the album that has a sax solo. I'm still not sure what this song is about. I haven't listened to it as much. 6/10

Sleep to Dream Her - Another love song. Didn't care for it much at first but now it is actually one of my favorites on the album. 8/10

Mother Father - Carlos Santana contributed on this song that has a latino background song. This is not a very popular song, as shown by the fact it was only played 8 times in 2001 and never seen again, but I really like this song. I have the only released version of this song that was released on a Warehouse 8 compilation, an it was very good! I wish they would resurrect this song in the future. 9/10

Everyday - The old #36 riff finally gets put on an album, but I really wish they would have recorded #36 in itself. This song is one of the more popular songs, but I don't really care for the studio version at all. The lyrics aren't very good. When played live however this song is enjoyable, with a fantastic violin solo that preludes the song and then it goes into #36. But sadly, that doesn't occur on the studio recording. 5/10

Overall, this album wasn't perfect, but there are a few really good songs on here like Space Between and Angel and Mother Father that make this album worth the purchase. Give the album a listen all the way through. It will grow on you.
