Free Music Notes for Live at Folsom Field - Boulder, ColoradoFree Music Review: Simply amazing... this DMB fan's favorite live album Hit: 5 Stars
The DMB community tends to refer back to Live at Red Rocks and Live at Luther College as the holy grails of DMB live albums. Put Live at Folsom Field right up there with them, if not higher. As someone who has been a fan for years but has only seen one DMB concert (September 2000 in Dallas), I really enjoy this album. The set list is perfect - it appeals to the longtime DMB fans with songs like "Crash Into Me", "What Would You Say", "Stay", and selections from the Lillywhite Sessions, and appeals to the "newer" Everyday crowd with a laundry list of songs from that album. In fact, hearing the live renditions of some of the Everyday songs actually enabled me to appreciate them more. Some fans may bemoan the set list for lacking such DMB classics as "Lie In Our Graves" or "#41", but I don't. What IS there is really, really great, and bringing the whole house down at the end with "Stay", "Two Step", and "Ants Marching" is a fantastic ending to a fantastic album. In fact, I'm gonna make it a point to see a show in 2003. You should too, but if you don't, then at least get this CD.
Free Music Review: The perfect venue for their music Hit: 5 Stars
A very nice blend of new and old, with stunning reinterpretations of "Warehouse" and "All Along the Watchtower." DMB is not a band to sit back on its laurels, but to keep marching forward with an impressive discography which will one day place it among the greats of rock music. They are the best thing that has happened to the music industry in the past decade, infusing it with new life and showing that you don't need catchy lyrics to sell out a concert or sell records. Great musicianship is never out of style. DMB really has to be listened to live to fully appreciate the range of their work. Their extended improvisations and heartfelt way of playing reaches back to the glory days of rock music when Zeppelin would stretch out their classic numbers like "Dazed and Confused" into memorable concert pieces. One will never hear "Warehouse" the same way twice. DMB finds new ways to interpret its music, much in the same way Coltrane never rested on "My Favorite Things." Dave Matthews constantly amazes me with the breadth of his musical range, and he has found perfect company in Tinsley, Moore, Beauford and Lessard.
Free Music Review: Dave Matthews Live: Everyday Hit: 5 Stars
For any band, artist and group, there is a 50/50 chance that they may sound either good or bad when performing live. Some artists, like Madonna, sound terrible live, but great in the studio. Dave Matthews sounds awesome in either situation.
On a roll with a multitude of live CDs under his belt already, Dave decides that on this adventure most of the tracks will be taken from his somewhat recent CD, Everyday. Now depending on how much you actually like this CD will have a baring on what you will think of this Live version.
Having said all this, Dave also has is usual favorite songs sung on this Live cd as well to attend to his fan base audience. So you need not worry about that.
All in all I really enjoyed this Live CD. I thought only one track, I Did It, felt rather flat and Dave's voice almost sounded almost scary! But all the rest sounded great!
Anyways, give this CD a try, again only if you were a big "Everyday" fan. If not, you may want to pass on to the others Live Cds under the Dave Matthews collection.
Free Music Review: I was there Hit: 5 Stars
I must be biased, I was there. Sitting 15 rows back from the stage, I took in this music first hand. Of course I was going to like the CD. I have over 100 live shows recorded by fans like me with Daves permission. Few in my memory (w/ the exception of the shows he did unplugged w/ Tim Reynolds) come even close to this show. Well maybe Giants Stadium, the third night. But seriously, this cd captures Dave and his bands artistry. The crowd was definitely pumped up. We knew they were recording us and every five seconds a camera would swoop over our heads. The cheers were more for the camera sometimes than the music. But something special happened when the the band got to Angel, something magical. You could see the crowd change, all of a sudden people really got into the music, we forgot about the cameras and Dave went nuts, Boyd whent crazy, butch started poundin, Stephan started swayin more and the night turned right. it was beautiful music. A great night. And dave whent over by 15 minutes playing 21 songs. Wow, buy this cd!
Free Music Review: Possibly the best live album DMB has ever released. Hit: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic album. Yes, many of the songs are from the band's lackluster "Everyday" album, but let me assure you--all of these songs are many times better than their studio counterparts, most notably "So Right" which is performed with a passion and fervor that very enjoyable to listen to. There is also a lot of material from "Busted Stuff, " and one unreleased track (JTR). Everything sounds excellent. One of my favorite songs on the album is "Bartender," which sounds so much better than the studio version. It is beautifully sung, and Leroi Moore's pennywhistle playing is awesome! Other outstanding tracks--"What You Are," "Everyday," "Crash Into Me," and "All Along the Watchtower." (Best version yet!!) Butch Taylor's keyboarding is also great, and his playing compliments all of the music wonderfully. This is a must-have for any DMB fan, or anyone else looking for a couple hours of great music. Do not pass this album by. You'll regret it.
