Free Music Notes for The GorgeFree Music Review: Music was fine but DVD was not Hit: 3 Stars
Do you remember the days when you couldn't see who was playing a solo because the editor was trying to make a music video out of live footage, tilting cameras, zooming in and out, and in other ways visually detracting from the musical experience? Well, you can bring those days back by watching this DVD.
But if you were hoping to watch Boyd Tinsley's fiddling in any serious way, you will have to limit yourself to the two special multi-angle tracks.
I suggest learning how to extract audio from a DVD in this case, because the music is very good, and because the songs on the DVD are not on the CDs. At one point in the "Making of..." about the Gorge video someone says that the film crew has all kinds of experience filming concerts. Well they must have gotten that experience in the sixties and seventies because they seem to have no idea how to make a 21st century live concert DVD.
It zooms around so much, it makes you dizzy. I wanted to see musicians performing, not ride a roller coaster.
Free Music Review: Average Hit: 3 Stars
If you are a moderate fan looking for live DMB material, try Central Park or Red Rocks first because you get an entire concert and can feel the flow of it. Many of the songs are new songs for live recordings, so that is refreshing. The sound quality is good, not great as compared to the others. Boyd's violin, especially in the dvd, is turned way down, and Dave was finishing an expansive summer tour and his voice is subpar (especially noticable on Pantala Naga Pampa). For hardcore fans this is a must though with a live Seek Up and Halloween on a DVD, along with a documentary. I just wish there was a flow to it and the quality was a little better. Not good starter material for new fans.
Free Music Review: Been There Hit: 3 Stars
First off i have to admit that i have not yet even heard the set. with that said, i can say that i was at the second show in the three day weekend that was recorded. the gorge is by far the best place to see a show. i have been to multiple dave shows there and this one was by far the best as well as the second day being the best. i anticipate hearing this set and if it does its best to emulate the live show, it should be worth it.
Free Music Review: Buy the 6 Disk set Hit: 3 Stars
This version of "Live at The Gorge" is ok, but the 6-disk version is much better. The 6-disk set of "Live at The Gorge" is recorded over a 3-day period and has some fantastic performances. You can only get it off the DMB site.
Free Music Review: Live at the Gorge Review Hit: 2 Stars
I'm a huge DMB Fan and have really been impressed with their other live cd's and DVD releases. However, I was pretty disappointed with this one. The reason being, the sound. To me the music sounds like it's missing something, like it needs to be "fattened" up. For instance, on Two Step whenever they go into what I call the chorus, you can vaguely hear Boyd's violin picking. I always look forward to that part of the song, but for some reason I can barely hear it. Dave's vocals don't sound as good either. I guess I'm just spoiled from the Central Park cd and DVD. However, even with the flaws I've mentioned, DMB are still some of the best musicians on the planet and do enjoy watching them play. I gave this a 2-star because I'm comparing it with other DMB albums put out.
