Free Music Review: Is It the Music or the Setting
Hit: 4 Stars

Recorded at Red Rocks in Morrison,Colorado on September 9-12,2005 the Dave Matthews Band gives the casual listener almost three hours of material from his end of tour stand. The recording does not capture a complete performance. For that one needs to get the Complete Weekend on the Rocks available from the band'd website. What is offered are highlights from the entire weekend and the two CD and DVD show does not disappoint.

Sonically, this show is similar to the show recorded at the Gorge but the song selection is better here. The high point is an incredible version of Louisiana Bayou featuring Robert Randolph and the rarely performed Smooth Rider. Bartender on the CD only is also great.

The DVD chooses ten performances some on and some not on the CD's. The picture and sound are excellent and Matthew's energy shines through on each song. The DVD runs about eighty-three minutes and is worth a look.

For about $25 dollars this set is well worth the price.

Free Music Review: The "make-up" CD
Hit: 4 Stars

This is DMB's make up compilation for Stand Up. Its a great compilation of songs, even the Stand Up selections shed a new light on the last no-so-great DMB studio release. The DVD is a nice adddition but is not the heart of the collection. Bartender is phenomanal but still not as good as 01's Folsom Field rendition. #34 is sweet, #41 is great as always, Louisiana Bayou was chilling and even more chilling on the DVD! Say GoodBye with a great intro is reminiscent of The Meadows concert of 2000. This is a great compilation of songs with an added bonus of the DVD. ITS NOT DIGITALLY PROTECTED, so you can easily transfer into digital music players. A five star rating if they had added all the DVD tunes to the music CD's, such as crash and so much too say, you'll need to buy the box set for all 4 nights worth of music. This is a must buy for every DMB fan and very much worth the twenty bucks!

Free Music Review: Good but could be better
Hit: 4 Stars

It's a good compliation of songs that were featured at the 4 day Red Rock event this summer. I think it's a little too much with the Stand Up songs, and they should have replaced American Baby with American Baby Intro which I think is probably one of the best live songs from the Stand Up album. Although I will say it is one of the few times that I've heard Dave not sounding flat in American Baby. The highlights for me are the first live releases of Pig (aside from the full weekend at the George set), Say Goodbye and Lousiana Bayou, Time of the Season, and Halloween.

I personally would have liked to have seen a full band version of Typical Situation from the weekend be included, Drive In Drive Out, Seek Up, Butterfly, Grey Street, and Hello Again. But that's why I also ordered the complete 8 disc weekend set from their website.

Free Music Review: Better go with complete
Hit: 4 Stars

Like other reviewers before me, I would also recommend getting the Complete Weekend on the Rocks from the band's official website. It's pricey but worth the money. The set offered in Amazon is a summary of a great show that doesn't deserve to be shrunken and picked apart.

With that said, this is still a good buy if you're a fan but not a crazed, completist DMB fan like most people who purchase DMB's live CDs. The new songs from the Stand Up CD sound so much better live. That's were DMB's energy can really be felt and appreciated.

Free Music Review: More rockin' than the Stand Up studio versions
Hit: 4 Stars

About half the tunes in this package are from the Stand Up studio album, but the versions here are decidedly less mellow and more rockin'. "Dreamgirl" on the DVD, for example, practically sounds like a different (and better) tune. Overall, Carter's live drumming kicks butt compared to the clinical sound of the studio tunes. Skip the Stand Up studio album and get this set instead. And at least listen to this one before you decide you don't like the selection of tunes on it.
