Free Music Notes for Live at Luther CollegeFree Music Review: THIS CD IS AMAZING Hit: 5 Stars
DMB fans,Right now it is about 1:30 a.m. on January 19, 1999 and this wonderful new album from Dave and Tim is finally out....Now the question is, why haven't you already gotten it? If you don't have it, stop reading this, get some money together and go BUY IT. If you like DMB you will love Live at Luther College. The first CD is my favorite and probably one of the best D+T sets I have ever heard. For those non-DMB (radio fans) the radio songs like Crash, Satellite, What Would You Say and Ants Marching are on the album. For the semi-dedicated DMB fans there are great versions of classic songs such as #41, Tripping Billies, Jimi Thing, Lover Lay Down, Warehouse, Two Step, Say Goodbye and many many more. Now, for those of you who are true DMB fans, (you know that the first DMB cd was not UTTAD (and you didn't have to think about what UTTAD stands for)) there are songs from Remember Two Thing such as One Sweet World (no intrumental intro though) and the Christmas Song. There are also four unreleased songs: Deed is Done, Tim's song Stream, Little Thing and the ever popular Granny. This double CD has a total of 23 tracks and you will not find yourself skipping over any of them. Between songs Dave interacts well with the crowd of Luther College students and even gets a few laughs. My Christmas wish was to get tickets to a Dave and Tim show in my area. I go to Boston College and I was upset to see that D+T were not playing in my area. If I do not get to a D+T show this year this CD will just about make up for it. IT REALLY DOES ROCK. -Patrick Morrissey morrisph@bc.edu January 19, 1999 1:36 a.m.
Free Music Review: One of the best acoustic live album performances Hit: 5 Stars
I gave this CD five stars because it is really worth buying. I listen to this CD more than all my other DMB albums and I have seven! You really can't go wrong with something like this. Not only are all the songs on here classic Dave Matthews but also they are so many times enhanced with the skillfull work of Tim Reynolds backing Dave. Some people would think that Dave not having all his bandmates would make the songs suffer in sound but Tim Reynolds more than makes up for the other players absence. His guitar work perfectly compliments Dave's songs. The first time I heard some of the solos Tim pulls off I was amazed. He can make sounds come out of his guitar that you have literally never heard before. Dave is also in top form. I think out of all the other albums his voice sounds best on this one and he sings with such passion in his voice! This album gives you a chance to here some of the more rare songs (Granny, Halloween, Deed is Done, and Little Thing) as well as some cool intros and outros to songs such as "What Will Become Of Me" at the end of Jimmy Thing. You also don't have to wait through some of the extended jam sessions that are on some of his other live albums, such as on listener supported. "Warehouse" is actually the longest song at about nine minutes. The intro to "Warehouse" is powerful and makes for one of the best versions of the song I've ever heard. In summary this is a beautiful live album that has peaceful and intimate acoustic versions of great songs. For old Dave Matthews Band fans and those not familiar with him as much it's a wonderful album for both.
Free Music Review: Not much beats Dave and Tim live Hit: 5 Stars
I have had the pleasure of seeing a show on the Dave and Friends tour. Dave and Tim opened the show by playing a couple of songs, just them, and it was amazing. This album is better than that. Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds were meant to play together. They seem to flow with the music the other person is playing. Tim's guitar playing, especially on "Stream", is just amazing-it's surprising his guitar can handle how intensly he's playing. First of all, "One Sweet World" is a great song and was a good song to start the show with. "Jimi Thing" is one of my favorite Dave Matthews Band songs and Dave and Tim do a great job without the rest of the band. I wasn't really a fan of the slow version of "What Would You Say", but it was still good. "Ants Marching" is my all-time favorite Dave Matthews Band song and Tim does a great job filling in Boyd's solo. The "Dancing Nancies" intro is pretty good. Personally I think that the violin needs to be in this song, but it doesn't really matter. The "Warehouse" intro is amazing, and the actual song is fantastic. Dave really tears it up on "Halloween". "Two Step" is an great way to end the show. This album has most of Dave's best songs. I was really hoping that they would play "Recently" or "#34", but this album is amazing anyway. Buy this cd. It is great and you will not be wasting you money. Thank you for your time.
Free Music Review: need I say more? Hit: 5 Stars
First and foremost, this 2-disc LP is an amazing piece of work. Not only by Dave Matthews, but by Tim Reynolds. The recording is amazing clear and the music is dynamic. It is rare to find two musicians of such talent that can compliment each other so well. Dave Matthews provides a powerful voice and rythem guitar while Tim expresses himself through his aggressive guitar playing and warped sounds. Even if you are not a Dave Matthews fan, I recommend giving this one a chance... it's acoustic, it's different, and it strips down the songs of the original recordings to the roots. Dave shows off his powerful voice and some of his storytelling abilities(if you get the chance to see him and Tim live.... Dave will never shut up with his funny stories and anicdotes, unfortunately the CD does not have many.) Tim shows off his guitar playing through out the CD and you will be listening in amazement(again, if you get to see them live... Tim's hand remains a constant blur..... truly unbelievable). This CD has a little of everything, new, old, unheard, and revamped songs like the version of 'What would you say'. Dave deserves strong praise for his continuous diversity in all of his CDs and continues to show it off even more on this live one, providing those that were unable to experience the live show itself to hear what they missed..... a cd that you will listen to continuously imaging yourself enjoying the live show with the energetic crowd.
Free Music Review: An excellent choice for a "Wannabe" Hit: 5 Stars
Why "Wannabes" you ask? The reasoning is quite simple, This is for all those souls out there who cannot afford the 30 bucks for a concert ticket, or who don't live in areas that the DMB visit, and who are not clued into the world of tape trading. I personally have never attended a DMB concert and have only dabbled slightly in taped concerts in mp3 format. From my brief experience i can say that in L@LC is sonically as good or better then any of the concerts i have. As far as the quality of the setlist, the mix is just about right for that time frame, the inclusion of Granny, and especially Little Thing really do make this concert a worthwhile one for a casual fan to pick up. Yes, some of the songs are a touch thin without the full band, but others are enhanced with just the two guitars. Many of the softer songs fall into this category, while the "rockers" do lack the full sonic blare of the entire band. So if you are not a "tape head" who lives for the day his or her latest concert arrives, or if you do not travel with the band, then by all means pick this album up. It shows why Dave Matthews is where he is today, stage charisma. So in conclusion, yes, almost all the music on this cd has already been released, but that is part of its charm, it is a picture of musical road warriors doing their thing. enjoy.
