Free Music Notes for Live at Luther CollegeFree Music Review: Phenomenal musicianship Hit: 5 Stars
It has become custom for Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds to do two-man acoustic shows in venues smaller-than-usual the stadium/arena areas hosting the extremely popular Dave Matthews Band. It is in this setting that Matthews' songs must stand on their own. Two guitars take the place of the brilliant musicians who form DMB. It is through this recording that we see how truly brilliant Matthews is. We also are introduced to the shear wizardry of Tim Reynolds. The set serves as a good sampling of the DMB song archive, as of 1996. It features all the familiar favorites (Satellite, Ants Marching, Tripping Billies), plus some rarities typical of Dave's live setlists (Deed is Done, Screaming from the Minarets, Granny, One Sweet World, Little Thing). It is very apparent that Dave is not some produced entity of the pop music world, but rather an empassioned storyteller and one who can express with eloquence the deepest feelings and emotions. Tim Reynolds compliments him brilliantly with his undeniable mastery of the world of guitar sound. I will admit this set appeals mainly to fans, but it can also convince those who are not of the beauty and passion of Dave Matthews.
Free Music Review: Dave and Tim Deliver Hit: 5 Stars
Before I start reviewing this actual CD, let me tell you something about the Dave Matthews Band. This band is clear-cut a step above the rest musically. Listen to their three studio releases and numerous live CD's to find that out. This band (and a few others as well) really represents what music is about. No, it's not about dancing around a stage and making people scream when you sing about women. It's also not about headbanging around the stage and acting satanic. So now onto Live at Luther College- the acoustic release from Dave Matthews and his friend Tim Reynolds. If you are a DMB fan, this CD is heaven. However, if you're a first-time listener, you'd be better off buying some of DMB's earlier stuff. Highlights on disc one include "One Sweet World", "Satellite", "Crash Into Me", and "Dancing Nancies". Highlights on disc two include "Stream" (a Reynolds solo), "Seek Up", "Ants Marching", "Little Thing", "Halloween", and "Granny" (the CD's best track). Definitely an enjoyable CD that showcases two of the most talented musicians out there today.
Free Music Review: Best live album ever Hit: 5 Stars
To those of you who know DMB, and particularly Dave by himself, I believe it goes without saying that this is BY FAR the best live album he has produced. Now I do know that it lacks the toher band members, who are undoubtedly irreplaceable. However, this release allows Dave to really shine by himself - with the assistance of the talented Mr. Reynolds, of course - exemplifying his voice and guitar as one glorious instrument. Live at Luther shows that Dave's musicality and artistry are unmatched by any other, and that he is not just some very attractive guy held up by his band. (Personal feelings aside, of course.) The music in this set will make you laugh and cry, I promise. And not only are you lucky enough to have this type of acoustic recording put out by him, but you are even more lucky because there are two CDs. You would be an absolute fool to pass this up. I listen to it so often I have had to but two replacements. My faves: Minarets, One Sweet World, Granny, What would you say, and Say Goodbye. For a completely opposite, yet equally tantalizing side of DMB, try Before these Crowded Streets. You would be doubly as foolish to pass that one too.
Free Music Review: What'd you expect? Hit: 5 Stars
You know, I don't really understand all of these people whose biggest complaint about the CD is the fact that it's all old stuff. Notice that this complaint is almost always accompanied with "I bought this CD..." I'm not a genius by any stretch (emphasized by the fact that I had to look up genius and stretch just to spell them) but I could figure out that it was old music by looking at the song list on the back of the CD. The song titles didn't change or anything. Another complaint, all they did was lose four band members, once again, I picked that up by noticing that it said, Dave Matthews and Tim Renynolds, note the lack of the word Band. My only guess is that these people were plauged by the sticker they post on these CD's that always seem to cover up the one thing you want to see. Don't tell me none of you have had this problem. In the end, it's a great CD to buy, it has a different sound and very Dave-ish live feel. And one more thing, if you're not a Dave fan, this would be the last CD you would buy. Anyone with a brain would pick up Crash or UTTAD or BTCS just because of the coverage they have.
