Free Music Notes for Live at Red Rocks 1995

Free Music Review: Quite worth the money.
Hit: 5 Stars

I had previously purchased The Central Park Concert by Dave Matthews Band, and thought that to be quite good. Then, I purchased this, and it simply blew me out of the water. This is the quintessential live DMB performance, simply amazing. I'll just share some thoughts on each song.

Seek Up- 10/10. One of my favorite DMB songs anyway, and this version is incredible. Leroi has a kickass solo in the intro.
Proudest Monkey- 8/10. Not among my favorite songs, but this is a good version.
Satellite- 9/10. You can never go wrong with Satellite, and this is a quite nice one.
Two Step- 9/10. I like this Two Step for the simple fact that they don't take it out to a 20 minute long jam- that allows for more songs, not spilling over to a third CD. But still, very good version.
Best of What's Around- 10/10. Incredible energy, terrific song.
Recently- 8.5/10. I don't usually like this song too much, but at the end of it is the Water/Wine Jam, a sweet little mini-song that leads to..
Lie In Our Graves- 10/10. Awesome song, awesome jam.
Dancing Nancies- 9/10. Lots of energy, nice jam, good song.
Warehouse- 9/10. At first I didn't like this version, because I'm used to the CP one. But it is still very good, just slightly faster, and without the stop-and-go intro.
Tripping Billies- 10/10. One of the classic DMB songs, performed excellently.
Drive In, Drive Out- 7/10. Nothing special this time, but still good.
Lover Lay Down- 8/10. Sweet love song.
Rhyme & Reason- 7/10. Don't really like this song, but it is played with great energy just like everything else.
#36- 10/10. This concert was from back in the golden days of #36, with the original chorus of "Hani, Hani". A great spirited song that is terrific to dance to.
Ants Marching- 10/10. Simply put, one of the very best versions out there. Excellent intro.
Typical Situation- 9/10. Good song.
All Along the Watchtower- 9/10. A fitting conclusion to a terrific cd.

If you're going to get any DMB live cd, get this one.

Free Music Review: Red Rocks vs. Live in Chicago
Hit: 5 Stars

There have been 182 reviews so I'm sure a lot has been said. However, let me just say that if you're deciding between Red Rocks and Live in Chicago, Red Rocks has a rough, fresh, energy-packed feel with exellent versions of Nancies, Warehouse, Seek Up, Ants Marching, Watchtower, and Typical Situation, however, Chicago is many times more full, mind-blowing, and professional. While it doesn't have the same "freshness" as Red Rocks, it's simply amazing and does much, much more justice to Tim Reynolds, and come to think about it, all of the members of the Dave Matthews Band. Also, Red Rocks (1995) is much more weighted on Under the Table and Dreaming and some early versions of Crash songs, while Live in Chicago (1998) has a whole lot of Before These Crowded Streets with only two songs from Under the Table. This contributes to the different moods of the two CDs. When comparing the Red Rocks version of Lie in Our Graves to the Chicago version (the only song that appears on both albums with the exception of Watchtower), the Red Rocks version seems weak and immature, while the Chicago vesion is absolutely breathtaking. To wrap things up, both are fantasic CDs (it's DMB, after all), and you really should buy both, however if you want that unmistakable early DMB sound, go for Red Rocks, and if you want a more "evolved" and powerful DMB sound or if you want more Tim, then go for Live in Chicago. All right, that's what I have to say (I think), hope it helps somebody a little.

By the way, if you are interested in hearing two amazing accoustic guitarists playing absolute masterpieces of songs, then click yourself away from this and go to Live at Luther College; it's what started it all, for me. Okay, that's it, I'm done. Goodbye.

Dave Matthews Band is definately one of the best and most talented bands out there right now. Dave Matthews himself, being one of the best singers/songwriters or our generation. "Live At Red Rocks" is just a tiny view of Dave, but is probably one of the best.

Without a doubt, the best Dave Matthews Band cd out there right now. The absolute opposite of Listener Supported. You cannot get any better than this. Whenever you combine the Dave Matthews Band with Tim Reynolds, there seems to be some beauty. Opening with "Seek Up", it's already a great concert. The guitar riffs of Tim Reynolds are absolutely amazing; Carters drum solos, incredible; Boyds energy, as high as it always is; and, of course, Stefan, Dave, and Leroi, rockin it like they always do. The highlights of this live album are: "#36": This is the best #36 that I have ever heard, absolutely incredible, with a Carter drum solo kickin it off. "All Along The Watchtower": One of the best Watchtowers out there, with a Dave solo after the 'Chorus', followed by a Tim Reynolds solo. Almost as good as the "Remember Two Things" version. "Dancing Nancies into Warehouse": It says it all right there; Two of my personal favorites, combined. Just a great version of Dancing Nancies, and the start/stop intro of Warehouse.

Don't get me wrong, every song on this cd is incredible. The only thing I find fault in with this cd is the version of "Two Step". It's not one of my favorite version, Two Step being my absolute favorite Dave song. Either way, this is a must have for any Dave fan, or any fan wanting to experience a great Dave concert, or someone who never even heard of Dave Matthews Band.

Before I review this album let me share with you a brief bit of DMB's history snce this was recorded

1996: Crash is Released
1997: This wonderful Album is released
1998: Before These Crowded Srteets is released
2000: The Lilywhite Sessions are left
2001: Everyday is released; The Lillywhite Sessions are leaked
2002: Busted Stuff is released
2005: Stand Up is released.

bow alot has changed in 10 years, and so has DMB's sound.

This 2 disc jam fest may be a shock to newer DMB fans, who are used to the radio hits.

while there are a few of those on here, they're not this recordings best stuff.

RR95 (as hardcore fans have abbriviated it) starts off with Seek Up, which dictates the pace for the rest of the concert.

the first disc is golden, straying from the radio singles(except for Satlelite which is amazing on this recording)

the second disc doesn't stop that vibe, and makes this truely a greeat live album.

Free Music Review: Could I have been lost somewhere at Red Rocks (on 8.15.95)?
Hit: 5 Stars

I don't think the DMB gets much better than what must have been an incredible late summer's night in the Colorado mountains in 1995. I had to smuggle these low-key tan-colored CD's from my friend's Case Logic one by one to listen to them, but the theft was worth it and I loved what I heard: like Crash, the sound is so instantly appealing, the definition of listenable, so sheeny and buoyant: listen to the little rubber ball-bounce quality of the guitar in the sneaking, teasing intro to Dancing Nancies, and Carter's falling stardust chimes mixing with the rocket ship vapor trail acoustic sound/"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" melody of "Satellite." Dave, too, still has that helium-balloon weirdness in his voice, but it's starting to mellow and enrichen and even flatten dully: the first encore song "Typical Situation" is so lonely; you can almost feel the darkness and wind starting to become chill and the dew starting to collect on the grass, and gets up to real pathos in a remarkable final two minutes filled with howled random syllables and sentence fragments firming up with the ironic recovery "we'll keep the big door open, everyone'll come around--you'll see." Great artwork, too...the album booklet has old black and white Gold Rush-era photos from`the actual construction of Red Rocks, and besides standard shots of the band, one photo is just of someone's shoes, all on almost-cardstock paper. If only I wasn't eleven at the time.

Fave lyric: "Some people drink, some people don't, / Some people think-- some people won't / Some people do and some people don't / but it's ok, 'cause it's meant to be that way." (Intro to "Recently")'
