I have been awaiting this album for some time now so when I heard that Dave Rawlings Machine was putting out a record I was elated.
"A Friend of A Friend" is sublime. It is hauntingly beautiful. It is also sing along fun. It is appropriate for kids, and adults who appreciate musicians playing music like they invented it, or in Dave Rawling's case, as if he just thought up some funny little thing to play on his guitar and it made him happy. It makes me happy too. Listening to this album has put a smile on my face that seems to be a permanent condition.
Please buy this album if you like any of the following: the Beatles, the Stones, Elvis, Jerry Garcia, and/or Neil Young. I hear them all in Dave's (and Gillian's) music. Oh, and it's no accident that the keyboards here are played by a major dude (think Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).
I have had the very good fortune to see Dave Rawlings Machine last year. There was an amazing array of musicians in the wings who were there because they wanted to play with the machine. And on the piano, was Benmont Tench. I must confess: that night I did not know who he was. But that night... my ears knew. Clearly he (and the other great talents to be heard on this album) makes a priority of Dave Rawlings' music.
No doubt I should have tried to describe better the music on the album for this to be a proper customer review, but I can't. Dave Rawlings' Machine's music is too profound. It's too hilarious. It's too beautiful.
This is a desert island CD. Now what are you waiting for? Buy it. You'll be glad you did.
