Free Music Notes for David ArchuletaFree Music Review: David A. Could Sing The Phonebook Hit: 5 Stars
You may have heard that comment by American Idol judges on more than one occasion, and for Archuleta's self-titled debut album, it proves to be the case.
While not a member of the "Arch Angels" fan club, I must say that I came away impressed after just a few listens, especially considering David's lack of recording experience and given the time constraints to get this record out to the eagerly awaiting record-buying public.
I was concerned how the Jive record label and the producers would try to market this kid...a humble, naive balladeer who had struggled a bit with modern dance-pop on "Idol". Once I heard the album, any doubts I had were quickly dismissed...he pulls off the lite-pop tracks convincingly...they definitely went the right direction with him. However, I was a bit surprised to find there are only a few pure ballads ("You Can", "To Be With You", "Angels")...as expected, he tackles these not only with ease, but also with sincerity.
The rest of the album consists of slow to mid-tempo groove-based tracks with the typical electronic percussion and handclaps...but it's not so overdone as to take away from the vocals and melodies...nicely done guitars, pianos and strings keep the 'human' factor high. The formula includes big choruses with lots of doubled vocals (the song "A Little Too Not Over You" is a stand-out example.
As with most records, there are a few things one could get picky about...a production flaw or two, a couple of songs that are a bit weaker in terms of the writing...but nothing so major as to disrupt the flow of the album. and certainly not any fault of David's. That's to be expected on a rushed record with such high expectations.
David overcomes any inadequacies and every song comes across pleasing to the ears (even the average material will grow on you after repeated listening...at least it did for me). I never expected to be rating this five stars, but he really did win me over with this effort.
It really is true Archuleta could sing the phonebook...he makes any song sound better than it is. There was a reason he was one of two still standing at the American Idol Finale. It's his voice that makes this record...he has quite a gift...and now millions will be getting to enjoy it even more.
Prime cuts: "Crush", "Touch My Hand", "My Hands", "A Little Too Not Over You", "To Be With You", "Angels".
Free Music Review: Very Impressive Debut Hit: 5 Stars
I LOVE this cd. I think that people have had different reactions to it based on their expectations due to his performances on American Idol. One of his most infamous performances on AI was IMAGINE. He could have easily done a cd of such ballads but it would not have been realistic and true to David Archuleta as a person. David is very innocent and shy as a person yet his vocal performances contain an intensity and maturity well beyond his years. But he is only 17. I don't appreciate ballads sung by performers who have never experienced the emotions involved with the lyrics.
The eclectic mix of songs here was masterfully put together to appeal to fans of all ages. Throughout, the entire cd is carried by David's amazing strong and broad vocals showing range musically and emotively beyond what we have seen before. The first single CRUSH is perfect and shows his great talent while being a modern pop song totally suitable for his age. TOUCH MY HAND is a definite crowd pleaser and will have you dancing and moving. Other uptempo standouts are RUNNING, A LITTLE TOO NOT OVER YOU, MY HANDS and DON'T LET GO.
YOUR EYES DON'T LIE is amazing. His vocals soar like velvet strokes over the lilting lyrics with the uptempo beat lightly in the background. But there are ballads here and all are exquisite. They are also believable for someone his age and sung with pure emotion. They are performed with very little instrumentation and just David's strong vocals in the forefront. YOU CAN and TO BE WITH YOU totally display how gifted he is but the closing track, his other AI standout ANGELS, wraps things up showing all that he is capable of. His range here is amazing.
This guy can sing and is so vocally gifted. His passion and heart comes out throughout this cd. What I love most is that it provides an excellent cohesive body of work displaying his vocal abilities while not definining him in any specific genre. The modern pop is excellent as well as the ballads. As I said before, he is only 17 and I can't wait to see what his next project will be as he matures both musically and a s a person. FYI, I am a 46 year old guy and am so excited about following the career of this uniquely talented guy. Vocal ability like his comes around very rarely. He will be giving us many vocal gifts to come.
Excellent debut.
Free Music Review: One of the best of 2008 Hit: 5 Stars
I buy a lot of music. David Archuleta's new self-titled album definitely ranks up there with the best of 2008. If the name sounds familiar, it is because David was a well-known contender for the American Idol title in its 7th season (aired during spring 2008).
The young singer's debut album is a great collection of pop music, each song with its own individual tweak of style. The vocals are incredible. Although, as expected, much more hidden beneath the beats and background vocals (much of which are also David Archuleta) than his live performances showcased on the show, due to the nature of pop recordings. In the future as the artist gains more freedom in his recording styles, I hope that we will be able to hear more of the beautiful vocals he can deliver. Most of the songs are upbeat, with 3 that are notable low-key: You Can, To Be With You, and his version of the Robbie Williams hit Angels. All of which are noteworthy, but You Can is possibly the best track on the album. The instrumentals are predictable pop piano, guitar, drums, etc. in mostly a very traditional and safe arena. I expected so much as Archuleta is a solo artist and not a band. The style is very much a combination of something you would expect if the Backstreet Boys, Beyonce, and Jason Mraz worked together on an album. The songs are catchy, the beats are infectious, the lyrics are okay but his delivery always makes them work, and of course there are moments when the vocals just soar.
Its no wonder that less than 6 weeks after its debut the album has already reached Gold status (sold over 500,000 copies). His first single Crush has already surpassed 1.2 million downloads as well!
Also to note: if you want to hear more of what we can expect from Archuleta in the future, check out A Little Too Not Over You and Don't Let Go, as Archuleta had a big hand in writing the songs in addition to performing them. If you are looking into purchasing the Deluxe Version, I highly recommend the track Waiting for Yesterday (amazing!), the other 2 are at a mere "above average."
Free Music Review: Archuleta was betta! Hit: 5 Stars
Earlier this year, Season 7 of American Idol ended with a battle of the Davids---the smarmy, Daughtry wannabe, Dave Cook, and the charming young kid from Utah, David Archuleta, with the strong voice. After a teen took the win in the previous season (Jordin Sparks), the voters opted for Dave Cook, a more mature choice, but it seems that, once again, the voters of AI got it wrong! While the lead single of Archuleta's debut cd has been receiving lots of airplay and landed at # 2 on the Billboard pop charts, Cook's single has failed to catch fire.
Archuleta's producers have smartly given the teenage balladeer love songs that best suit his voice and will, no doubt, appeal to the dedicated fans who voted for him consistently. The set of songs follows the ups and downs of young love, from the pining for another and wondering if feelings will be returned in the lead single, "Crush", to the loss of love in "A Little Too Not Over You". Tender ballads are the order of the day on this cd with songs like "You Can" and my personal favorite, "To Be With You", which should be the second single in my opinion. "Barriers" begins with a very nice old school groove and continues with a revved up pop chorus, and "Your Eyes Don't Lie" is another favorite with its catchy "western showdown" vibe. Little Dave ends the cd with a cover of Angels, a fan favorite on American Idol and a beautiful song co-written by British pop star, Robbie Williams (who originally performed the song).
Fans of Archie will be pleased with this strong set selection. The producers did a very nice job of picking songs that compliment Archuleta's singing style as well as the type of music that will please his diverse fan base. While another teenage sensation, Taylor Swift (whose voice is weaker but may have more fans) may grab the # 1 Billboard spot, Archuleta should do well with this debut offering. And, after the win of Dave Cook in May, Archuleta may have the last laugh and the fan sentiment, "Archuleta was betta!" may, indeed, ring true!
Free Music Review: Better Than Other American Idol RELEASES!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I must say i was blown away by this CD. I guess David would fall under the POP category but he isn't churning out the dance club POP tracks to the like of electronic Britney. For the most part the album consists of Pop Ballads. There are about 2 songs that i would skip over but for the most part the album delivers. 70% of the album is listenable, so to me that is a winner. With so many album releases these days you find commercial artist only being able to deliver 3 good songs while the other 9 songs are big disappointments.
David has a very refreshing young voice. Very pure and innocent if that makes any sense? He doesn't seem tainted yet. But I am sure after his heart is broken by his first love you will see a shift in his voice. For now he is still young and probably a bit naïve. I just hope his father doesn't take the belt out if he doesn't go platinum.
For David's first album, I found myself being able to listen to almost every song on here. As i mentioned i only skipped about 2 songs that I didn't really care for. David does have a nice voice but because he is so young you can feel his voice is lacking a certain type of emotion that perhaps not many people can catch. But as he grows older his voice will mature and that emotional connection that is missing will no longer be visible. The 1st release single "Crush" is a standout hit from the beginning. As for the remake of Angels he delivers once again. It would have been nice to see 14 songs as oppose to 12. But I'll settle for this release rather than none. This album is away better than Jordin Sparks, Fantasia, and Blake Lewis. The list can go on and on. There are so many American Idol winners & Runner Ups that just deliver such nonsense. I have no idea what that is about. Can someone please tell me? And where is Chris Richardson's CD?
