Free Music Review: This Doesn't Suck!

I have long been a fan of Arkenstone, and like any artist, he has downs and ups. This release is absolutely an up. A friend said upon hearing it that it was "Doctors office music from the 60's." I patently disagree.
From the first notes of Sleigh Ride across an aural landscape of sweeping fields of snow, to the first spine tingling(In a good way) synths of Angels We Have Heard On High, Arkenstone has crafted a work of impeccable beauty and engrossing escapism.
I only recently discovered they had invented a new kind of music called "Chill", but I immediately knew it was my new favorite genre, and this album doesn't disappoint in the slightest. It combines the etheric, haunting instrumentals he's well known for, with a backbeat rhythm that doesn't make you tap your feet, you simply are compelled to sway and close your eyes to drink it all in.
Unobtrusive yet engrossing, it is perfect for driving down a long snowy road, at a Christmas party as background music to set the mood, but not drown out conversation, or to curl up with a good book next to the Christmas tree.
As for Christmas music, it satisfies on a whole new level. I love Bing, Dean and Burl as much as the next Christmas enthusiast, but it's always nice to hear a new take on old favorites. While not immediately recognizable, the way he's taken a standby like "We Three Kings" and injected it with a upbeat southwestern flair, or the refreshingly hip Carol Of The Bells with a very film noir trumpet almost makes hearing them seem like the first time again.
I absolutely -love- this album, and cannot recommend it enough. Admittedly, this will not appeal to everyone, but if you like Chill or Lounge music, and want to make a cheery and warm playlist for tree-trimming and gift wrapping to keep you in the mood, this album will win a place on the shelf next to the traditional standbys.
It's a shame this album seems to be so maligned and unappreciated, it's a remarkable body of work that should be praised, not panned.
Buy this without worry, it will not disappoint.
