Free Music Review: Updating the Brothers Grimm

This album was an instant classic from the moment I first heard the opening track. Literate, subtle, passionate stories about men losing their women, their money, their minds and more. Standout tracks include "Dance" (go on, try not to want to dance to it), "Liberty, Lies and Refugees" (take a walk down desolation row and learn how 'instead of Nero/ we have Madonna fiddling with herself') and "In The Morning" (a not so fond farewell, achingly rendered). Although these stories explore the darkness of our collective dystopia Baerwald finds islands of light ("Good Times") even when he's sitting in a dark place himself ("Hello Mary"). This is America seen through a lens darkly Brothers Grimm style but with a sense of humour ("Young Anymore" for example). When it was stolen from my home a dozen years ago I was devastated as it was out of print and when I found it again one day on a hunt through an old new and used store in Victoria (long live the independants!) it felt like meeting an old friend. The kind of friend you want to invite in and stay awhile.
