Free Music Review: Another poor album from Bowie's "wilderness years..."

Yeah, man. This is what I've always wanted. David Bowie combined with trip-hop, techno, and house music. Seriously, now this is a bit much even for me, a guy who loves experimentation and really appreciates Bowie's love of it. But did you know this album has more annoying keyboards on its first two tracks than the previous two albums had put together? Whatever entertainment I might've gotten out of "The Wedding," "You've Been Around," and "Night Flight" are violently sapped out by synthesizers and vocodors. And the house cover of "I Feel Free" is so wretched, it can't even win points for unintended laughs. It just blows, that's all. I'm not saying the album is fully hopeless, unlike the last two. I actually like a few of these songs! For instance, he does cool stuff with the synth-funk whateverness on the title track and "Jump They Say." And the weird pseudo-instrumental "Pallas Athena" isn't too bad, I suppose. The muted trumpet does sound nice. And "Miracle Goodnight" is funky enough to be passable. But those are exceptions. The ballad "Don't Let Me Down and Down" lets one down and down, as much as I hate to sink to that level of bad punning - it's a terrible "atmospheric" track. And the rave-jazz thing becomes quite annoying by the time "Looking for Lester" comes around. I guess I should at least try to be happy because "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" is organic, but the sappy gospel chorus grates at my ears. And then "The Wedding Song" sends everybody involved home unhappy. It's pretty much useless to argue that yes, this is superior to its two predecessors. But it's still pretty bad. Thankfully, Bowie's comeback was on its way.
