Free Music Notes for Never Let Me Down [ECD]
Free Music Review: (1.5 stars) Just as bad as Tonight, and maybe a little bit worse...

An album so bad Bowie himself publicly apologized for it, and I don't blame him. This is his inept '80s pop album, whereas Tonight was Bowie's inept '80s everything-else album. The thing is that, song-wise, this is the slightest bit better than Tonight. There are two classics here, rather than only one: the excellent dance-social commentary song "Time Will Crawl," with a synth part that sounds like it took more than two seconds to right and a really catchy chorus; and the bittersweet title track, which features a genuine, heartwarming vocal and a fun harmonica. It's a really good song! It makes me smile! It's so cute! Sadly, I find this album quite difficult to listen to, because it's longer and more monotonous than Tonight, and it has no diversity at all. The message tune "Day-In, Day-Out" especially suffers from this - if it weren't for the hair-metal guitar and glossy synthesizers blasting away, its anti-poverty themes could've been much more meaningful. Alas, no. Still, it's not completely unlistenable, unlike some of these other songs. Like "Beat of Your Drum," an overbearing mix of way-too-loud keyboards and drum machines. And the record's two experiments fail: the "ominous" "Zeros" and spoken-word story meets ambient blippiness "Glass Spider" are two of the most obnoxious songs in Bowie's catalog. There's also a rap on "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)," an '80s funk song even more terrible than "Dancing with the Big Boys," and you know how that's gonna work out. Horridly. I don't mind the infamous "New York's in Love," though I feel I should hate it - it's decent, other than the guitar solo, a painful reminder of why I hate '80s pop as much as I do. I can safely say it's loads better than the awful "'87 and Cry," a dated hard rocker. Or the Iggy Pop co-write, "Bang Bang," which packs on unnecessarily stupid-sounding synthesizers. I mean more than the rest of this wretched album.
