Free Music Review: Strangely great

Every Bowie fan I know doesn't much care for his nineties work, and the consensus about this album among the more prestigious music critics, like Rolling Stone, seemed to be that Bowie was trying too hard to do something experiemental to win back his rebel cred and for that reason most of the album sounds like good song writing diluted with pretentious instrumentation and funny voices. I think it was Rolling Stone that said something to the effect the only time he relaxes his desperate need to be weird and presents a song in its simplest detail is Strangers When We Meet.
Maybe I'm just looking at the same phenomena from a different angle, but I love that this album is obvioulsy a huge, brainstormy "dude, wouldn't it be cool if" tangent. The literal story being, uh, "told" may be incomplete, excessive, self-indulgent and relate-able only to a specific niche of science fiction fans, but I'm a member of that niche.
Basically, a man named Leon Blank, who seems to be capable of manipulating the space time continuum and is somehow personally involved (romantically?) with a transhumanist cult leader, is falsely accused of murdering a 14 year old girl, while the real killer, a deranged artist living with a shop owner named Algeria Touchshriek, runs free. It is also believed this is an "art crime"- that is, a crime meant to have artistic value, and may be legally evaluated based on its artistic merits rather than its destruction of life and limb.
It's definitely my kind of story, but even if it wasn't, music is the most important thing about music, and this is simply good, experiemental electronica and industrial rock with a few genre-benders thrown in (A Small Plot of Land, I Am With Name, Wishfull Beginnings). Some songs seem to have thematic consistency, as in you are noticing a raw impression (see the song writing of Syd Barrett or Cedric Bixler-Zivala). In fact, most of the album is like this, but it works the most on A Small Plot of Land, I Am With Name, We Prick You, I'm Deranged and The Motel. Some odd songs have a more noticeable "thesis" like Thru These Architects' Eyes, Strangers When We Meet, No Control and I Have Not Been to Oxford Town. Some songs straddle these categories, like The Heart's Filthy Lesson and, Voyeur of Utter Destruction and the title track.
So yeah- buy for the cyberpunk weirdness and catchy electric hooks, keep for the surprisingly convincing and expressive song writing. My five favorite picks would be (in no particular order) The Voyeur of Utter Destruction, We Prick You, Strangers When We Meet, I'm Deranged and A Small Plot of Land. And yes, I don't know if I'm spelling voyeur right, which is pathetic since the track listing was just one screen back, but whatever.
Point being this does not seem like the work of an old guy struggling to remain relevant and is meets the standards of anything that came before it.
