Free Music Review: A smart concept done well
Hit: 5 Stars

With most concept albums about the future the music and lyrics turn either into constipated mush or unfocused fodder. This one, however, hits the mark like no other has. I'm a huge Bowie fan, but when I was younger I didn't listen to music much until I discovered industrial music, and when I got into Bowie this album was an incredible surprise, and delight. But first of all, for all you folks calling this a NIN rip-off, SHUT UP, it's called industrial music, not NIN music, so grow up and learn a thing or two about music before spouting.

Like other futuristic albums I know, Billy Idol's 'Cyberpunk' was like I said before, unfocused; there's no real story and the music itself doesn't sound very futuristic, but rather now it sounds like out-dated early 90's electronica/punk. Gary Numan's brilliant 'Replicas', which I absolutely love, tends to feel to me a bit constipated; all the songs fit the concept, but there is no underlying story (that you hear) so the album tends not to go to far from track 1.

This album, however, comes with a short story written by Bowie, so if you get confused in the often confusing lyrics you actually get a (brilliantly written) background. Bowie's writing style is honestly like almost nothing I've experienced before, but I would say it seem pretty W. S. Burroughs-esque.

The music ranges from progressive rock to shoe-gazer, from heavy electronica to heavier industrial menace. the range in music is what really brings in the concept. It isn't one techo-laden rock song after another, absolutely not at all.

The more rock-oriented tracks (Outside, Strangers When We Meet, The Voyeur of utter destruction, and Thru' These Architect's Eyes) are the few tracks that don't clearly dive between genres, and are nice liberators from the electronic production of most tracks.

The industiral-tinged pieces (Heart's Filthy Lesson, Hallo Spaceboy, I have not been to oxford town, I am with name, and wishful beginnings) may remind people of NIN, but I honestly don't hear it, because I know industrial music and these pieces sound more like something that, say, David Bowie would do. He's an honestly original musician, and these songs prove it. Wishful beginnings is a deeply gothic track, I have not... houses some interesting trip hop percussion, no two tracks sound the same at all. The interesting thing about the song 'I am with name' is that the music was used very heavily during the entire Outside recording sessions. Many songs actually derive from similar music, especially the percussion.

The Motel, A Small Plot of Land and the segues are deep compositions with smart instrumentation. I feel there's a little of Buddha of Suburbia's jazz influence still in these songs. The Motel is an incredible and disturbingly dark ballad, and the segues' voice-overs (all done by Bowie) fit in perfectly in the scheme.

I think people have the most problem with the electronica-tinged pieces (No control, We Prick you, and I'm deranged) but these just show Bowie's strong diversity with genres and instrumentation. These serve as strong precursors to Earthling (an album that tried a little too hard to be one thing, and could've done well with more variety like Outside).

So enough 'Bowie's a rip-off artist'. This album is a true testament to Bowie's genius, and since I first purchased it it's been a frequent inhabitant of my player. I think I may need to purchase a new copy soon.

And if you can find a copy of the unreleased songs from Outside do so, they're worth it.
