Free Music Review: Only one damn song...

Bowie's `Young Americans' is an album that I bought for one reason only; it was a David Bowie album from the 70's, his most important era. Otherwise, I would have no interest in a blue-eyed soul record. For that reason alone is `Young Americans' worth the price of purchase because there is no way on God's green earth I would buy a soul record. Yes the title track is a classic as is "Fame" but they are far from my favorite Bowie songs. I actually like "Across the Universe" (both this and "Fame" featuring John Lennon!) better than the Beatles version which I'm sure is heresy but I am not a big Beatles fan. "Can You Hear Me" has appeared on various compilations but I'm not crazy about this one either. The performances, by yet another new band including Carlos Alomar and Luther Vandross, are stunning but again.....I don't like Hall and Oates or the O'Jays so who cares! Songs on David's previous album had hinted at this soul direction and the subsequent tour and live album betrayed much of this seemingly new enthusiasm but no one expected a selling of the "soul" on an entire record! I just can't give this album a high grade because I just flat out don't enjoy it. `Station to Station'? Well, that's another story!

With 1975's Young Americans, David Bowie chose to head in yet another "new direction," this time extrapolating on the slick disco-soul vibe that characterized 1974's David Live. Surrounded by an army of backup singers (including Luther Vandross) and smooth session players, Bowie actually makes the stylistic affectation work on three of the songs--"Fame," "Young Americans," and "Can You Hear Me." The rest of the record suffers from a dearth of quality songwriting; all the tasty licks in the world can't disguise the fact that "Fascination," "Win," "Somebody Up There Likes Me," and "Right" are basically empty-headed disco vamps. (And the less said about the overwrought cover of the Beatles' "Across the Universe," the better.) A necessary transitional step to Station to Station, perhaps, but not a great record. --Dan EpsteinAlternative Rock Music CDs
