Free Music Review: MORE COMPELLING LIVE, BUT HAVE TO LOVE HIM
Hit: 4 Stars

Grown Backwards seems a summation of Byrne's twenty years of maturation since Talking Heads. His new lyrics still offer cracked imagery, but a perceptible framework of thought now makes itself more easily noticed; current events, from the deeply personal to the global, can be discerned, rustling about in the undergrowth on the outskirts of perception. Especially with the Tosca Strings, a string sextet, so prominently featured, Byrne's pop arrangements are often scored with a minimalist sensibility that imparts a spirit of downtown seriousness to them. Byrne is in often exceptional voice on the recording, a description of his singing that would have been unlikely back in the day. Not only has his arsenal of personae gained convincing depth; his duet with Rufus Wainwright on a Bizet opera aria is both idiosyncratic and breathtaking.

Free Music Review: Arias
Hit: 4 Stars

David Byrne started his career reciting lyrics in a new wave declamatory style; over the years, he's learned to sing, and proves it in this CD of emotionally intense arias. Some of the arias are even written by Bizet and Verdi. It's worth the price of the CD just to hear him and Rufus Wainwright sing the duet from "The Pearl Fishers", but this CD is a lot more than that; it's the most unified work Byrne has ever done; each song takes something from all the others, and each is perfectly placed on the CD. It lacks a bit in variety what it gains in unity, and you may get annoyed at Byrne's more fatuous lyrics ("glad"), but he's still one of the best lyric-writers out there, and he's as good as he ever was, good as he ever was.

Free Music Review: Intelligent Bohemian Pop
Hit: 4 Stars

Masterfully composed and recorded by Ex Talking Head's frontman, Grown Backwards is an assured, slightly pretentious, eclectic pop triumph. From the opening notation, it is evident Bryrne has come in peace and is opting for joy throughout in a more welcoming, broader musical pallette. From sunny Mediterranean beaches to starlit Italian nights, this album has something for the slightly adventurous adult contemporary musical seeker in all of us, complementing the quirky, worldly instrumentation with his jaded humor to beautiful, transporting effect.

Free Music Review: An Opinion
Hit: 4 Stars

In response to the listener who may be dissatisfied or perhaps depressed - Mr. Byrne has not ventured so far as some may spite to believe. There is no replacement or even possible description for what the Talking Heads were. After the timely breakup of The Heads, (didn't they try to sell that sans Byrne?) Mr Byrne seemed to revisit his earlier trecks into pure composition. My point being: file this one with the subdivision including "The Forest" and "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts". If you want to hear "Rei Momo", put in "Rei Momo".Enjoy your space...

Free Music Review: Byrne IS the man
Hit: 4 Stars

David Byrne has to be one of the most talented and most original american artists. All of his solo albums are as good if not better than his work with Talking Heads. Thats saying a lot. This album was a bit of a departure but then again all of his albums have their own unique quality. My personal favorite is a tie between Feelings and Look into the Eyeball. This album's last track is the longest Byrne song I've heard and it's a masterpice unto itself. All of his solo work is a must. Buy and smile. You wont be dissappointed.
