Free Music Notes for Look Into the EyeballFree Music Review: Everyone should be in love with this... Hit: 5 Stars
Wow. After waiting for 4 long years, David Byrne has finally released another c.d. This c.d. was definitely worth the wait. The songs are excellent. If you loved his previous effort, Feelings, this seems to almost be it's "part II". Both start out with a soulful/funk song (in this case, "U.B. Jesus", in Feelings that is "Fuzzy Freaky"). Also, both c.d.s' track 9 contains a heavy string section. Anyhow.. all comparisons aside, this c.d. starts out with the funky "U.B. Jesus". Throughout the duration of the album, there are influences from more classical string arrangements ("Smile"), old simplistic love songs ("Everyone's in Love With You"), 70s-ish Motown sound ("Neighborhood") and soforth. The album runs a huge gamet of genres, which makes this album appealing to a more diverse audience. I personally enjoy all of the songs on this c.d. However, not everyone may agree. If you like strings, some funk, some Motownish sound, and just a laid-back good time.. check this out (this is what I imagine Phish would sound like at age 50.. very good stuff). Don't expect material even CLOSE to reminiscent of the Talking Heads days.. he's come quite a way!-D. McC.
Free Music Review: He came together Hit: 5 Stars
This album has eclipsed all of Byrne's other solo records by a marginal stretch. it seems that all these years, the sound has been there, the lyrics have been there, but the music lacked the cohesiveness Talking Heads were so polished at. "Eyeball" is quite the contrary. on this record Byrne has managed to combine all his great qualities, and it sounds incredible. the album's tone is jump started with the opening track "U.B. Jesus". from the strong opening to the car metaphor in closing, the song makes me shake. i can't find anything wrong with this album in any way. from start to finish it is a balanced attack of string sections, excellent lyrics that help me relate to my own life. even songs that i thought were too light or popish when i first got the record, have grown to become my favorites songs, such as "Neighborhood". i would say that in comparing Byrne's lyrics now to those from the Talking Heads era, they are less complex and are more concentrated on holding the rhythm of the music. but the music is still that erie brand of pop that forced me to focus all my listening time upon Byrne and his cohorts. i couldn't be more pleased with his latest effort.
Free Music Review: This is enduring art Hit: 5 Stars
Its weird and perverse, and in David Byrne's odd Dada world he probably appreciates the irony. Having grown dramatically in aesthetic and musical stature since his youth. . .his crowds have dwindled to the faithful. "Used to be part of the Talking Heads" is a very sad diminuative for someone so talented, who's consistently exploring and refining."Look into the Eyeball" is alternately rocking and melancholy and beautiful and angular. . .just like the guy. Buy it if you want to hear musicianship, buy it if you want to hear passion, buy it if you want to dance. One reviewer noted that his "live" performance (on "Conan") was weak. . .it was, and DB both looked uncomfortable and sang badly. On the other hand, his live performance on this tour have been extraordinary (I saw him at the Apollo Theatre and Bowery Ballroom. . .phenomonal). So all I can say is that the guy can't sing for the cameras (which makes you wonder about "Stop Making Sense, I know. . .)
Free Music Review: Heaven is a place were lots of things happen Hit: 5 Stars
David Byrne has been producing excellent solo albums for over a decade. And amazingly has succeeded in being ignored by the general buying public. Why its hard to fathom? This album is his most luscious and pleasant to date. Beautiful use of strings, clever catchy lyrics and as always a diverse collection of carefully crafted songs. I could waffle on all night about the wonderful tapestry created by this guy but really for the sake of a few dollars just buy the album and listen to it at least 5 or 6 times. If you are not hooked by then stick to Whitney Heuston and Garth Brooks records they are safer and will not tax the mind. Hopefully Mr Byrne will stick to making records and avoid trips into print which are his only Sins. For the record my ratings are UB JESUS *****,REVOLUTION *****,GREAT INTOXICATION ****,LIKE HUMANS DO ***,BROKEN THINGS ***,THE ACCIDENT ****,DESCONOCIDO SOY *****, NEIGHBOURHOOD ****,MOMENT OF CONCEPTION ***,WALK ON WATER ***,EVERYONE'S IN LOVE WITH YOU *****
Free Music Review: Where's the nearest David Byrne Anonymous Meeting ? Hit: 5 Stars
This like most other David Byrne Album's makes the listener like the music rather than the music being likable to the listener - Why ? Because David Byrne is a true creator of music. My first up likes of this album is 'Like Humans Do' - I can't stop wanting to start tapping and dancing to this one - it is really addictive stuff. I do miss the simple love song included on earlier DB albums (Feelings trk 7, David Byrne trk 8, Rei Momo trk 15) that send me (in my imagination) into my lovers arms each time I hear it, but there doesn't seem to be one on this album (Well that's simple and does it for me) Anyone that does catch DB live should feel lucky as we don't get him down here much (Not since the David Byrne tour). David Byrne has been taking me on a wonderful trip through a music safari for 20 years and this does not disappoint. If you have an open mind and don't have preconceived ideas about what music you like or what this should be - then you will love it.
