Free Music Notes for Look Into the EyeballFree Music Review: All 'Humans' Should Own This Hit: 5 Stars
I have never really been a big fan of David Byrne, or Talking Heads for that matter, but a while back I saw an appearance of Byrne performing "Like Humans Do" on David Letterman and was very intrigued. I decided to buy it because I wanted something different in my collection. It definitely is different. Each song on this album displays a different sound. The album's opener "UB Jesus" pulls you into 'Eyeball' with odd lyrics and fantastic use of backing vocals. "Like Humans Do", the song that originally reeled me in, is amazing on this album. It is very colorful and melodic - as are a lot of songs on this album, including (especially) "Desconocido Soy", a Spanish-sung tune that allows you to enjoy the song even if you don't know what is being said! "The Accident" is a dark, eerie song with an amazing vocal hook. This album is overall incredible. If you want something new, different, and fun - get this!
Free Music Review: SwitchFoot, "Beautiful Letdown" Hit: 5 Stars
I like SwitchFoot because of their style of music that they offer through different types of songs and a more wide spread of songs on their albums. "Beautiful Letdown" was released in 2004 was outstanding. I thought that it was the best album that they have ever written. It had a different style of music that they didn't have in their older albums. I know that this album is very popular because of the amount of people listening to it.
"Meant to Live" is one of my favorite songs. I use the song in a lot of my movie making programs on my computer. It is an up beat song that gives the movie a better rating when people see it because of its popularity. The song is all over the radio stations even though it is a Christian band. Other songs that are offered in "Beautiful Letdown" are outstanding as well, which makes the album the best in 2004.
Free Music Review: Byrne's Best Work in Years Hit: 5 Stars
Look into the Eyeball is one of David Byrne's best albums. It's an album you can dance to, listen to carefully, or play as background music. What makes it truly brilliant is that Byrne merges his trademark dance rhythms with string sections - this amalgam works best on the album's best tracks such as 'U.B. Jesus' and 'The Great Intoxication'. Byrne's typically droll observations on life, teenagers and relationships permeate his lyrics, and a lot of the songs on this album truly stir the emotions. 'The Revolution' is sweet and lyrical; 'Like Humans Do' is cynical yet sung with a great air of apathy; 'Desconocido Soy' is like being in a Latin jazz lounge (it's reminiscent of 'Rei Momo'); and 'The Accident' is truly quite a powerful song in its use of a cello and a bass drum. So, definitely get Look into the Eyeball - it exemplifies just how good Byrne really is.
Free Music Review: Short but ever so sweet Hit: 5 Stars
Dave is in fine form on this CD- his voice is great, the songs are really catchy and full of hooks. It's a bit like you always knew them at times- 'Walk On The Water' will have you singing along on the second listen. They range from a frantic 'Moment of Conception' to a slow Eleanor Rigby-style 'The Accident' and a Philly-fied 'Neighborhood'. Great stuff all around, different styles in each song but with a clarity achieved in using one producer cf. several DB used with "Feelings". The production is very crisp and clear and the strings which are on most of the songs sound great- very cool melodic lines they pick out. The groovy phasing on the drums on 'Neighbouhood' is a personal favourite. A lovely CD of excellent music which I heartily recommend you add to your collection. As with DB's recent CD's the artwerk is excellent.
Free Music Review: Simply Magnificent Hit: 5 Stars
What a mixed bag of reviews here! Surprised to see so many mention "gray hair" and "aging" musician in their reviews. Apparently many hold the opinion that age detracts from musical ability rather than adds to it. So sad that our culture is often so ageist. Looking at it logically, it would seem age would add to musical ability as ones experience and repotroire grow.
At any rate, I love this cd and it holds some very special memories for me. It is incredibly listenable yet never boring, even after countless replays. The overall tone is somewhat melancholy yet far more uplifting than depressing. It touches on many deep levels yet appears so simple and straightforward. An amazing and timeless cd and one of my top five ever.
