Free Music Notes for Shut Up, You Fucking Baby!Free Music Review: Absolute genius!!! Hit: 5 StarsBoth this and the newer release "Its not funny" are complete gems! I almost missed out on buying these albums when I considered the sophomoric opinions of some of the other reviewers. The content and delivery of David's sets are perfect--well worth the money! I've listened to them over and over again and still enjoy the well-honed style. I've had a great time sharing these cds with friends and family--everyone loves them. Do yourself a favor--ignore the flaccid, mainstream-minded protests (these are the same people who would accuse the Rolling Stones of having poor grammar and being gratuitously "naughty") and pick these up!!
Free Music Review: Meh. I'm not laughing. Hit: 2 StarsAs I write this review of David Cross' "comedy" disc, I'm well aware of the bashing I'll get from the anti-Bush crowd. To clarify: I dislike the Bush administration, I'm hardly a right-wing fundamentalist Bible beater, and I dig plenty of political comedians--George Carlin (Class Clown-era), Lewis Black, and Bill Hicks are some of my favorite standup comedians of all time. I like Mr. Show. Some of the skits there were truly daring, creative humor. Cross certainly has potential--it's mostly wasted here.
The crux of the matter is: I was expecting comedy, and all I got was bad comedic timing, scads of left-wing/atheist ranting and rambling with no payoff whatsoever, and lots of horribly amateurish "um's" and "uh's." It's just a wholly underwhelming performance. Not to mention the amount of totally extraneous profanities thrown around. I'm no prude, but when Cross actually apologizes for the excess swearing in the liner notes you KNOW he listened to himself and realized that it's just not funny, merely pointless and a tired crutch. All in all, I think I might have laughed twice listening to this in its entirety.
If you're deadset on listening to two full discs of this sub-Chomsky lecturing, go right ahead. But based on Shut Up You F--king Baby, all I can conclude is that in terms of standup comedy Cross is to Hicks as Andrew Dice Clay is to Sam Kinison--a boring, half-baked wannabe. Sorry for raining on the pro-Cross parade.
Free Music Review: Just not funny. Hit: 2 StarsIt's really funny how everyone who dislikes this CD is called a republican catholic right-winger and whatnot. From a strict comedy point of view, this CD fails miserably. It would be much more accurate to file this CD under 'long-winded political and religious rants'. It may be spot-on as political commentary but certainly not as comedy. Although perhaps some people enjoy listening to someone read from a Promisekeepers program. I can't get rid of this boring CD quickly enough.
And before you attack me, I enjoy left wing and off-color comedy immensely. In fact most of the best comedians are both left-wing and off-color. Lewis Black and George Carlin are two who jump to mind as being able to skillfully merge politics and comedy into something amusing regardless of your own political views. The priority on a comedy CD should be, make sure you are funny first and THEN work in political commentary.
Free Music Review: Hilarious lefty rants Hit: 5 StarsDavid Cross is a master of sharp, angry irony and mercilessly accurate description. The parts about the South, and Atlanta in particular, were totally dead-on indictments of the lingering ignorance and racism and proud hick-ness of the region. And his unflinching send-ups of national craziness after 9/11 and its exploitation by opportunistic, incompetent politicians is not only hilarious but also heartnening, because it emboldens you that the man can stand on stage and not shy away from the hypocrisy and, in his own words, "evil" power-grubbing tendencies of our post-9/11 leaders, especially Bush. Cross's main strength as a humorist is his mastery of irony, but as an orator he's nearly unmatched. Always hitting where it hurts, but still making you laugh, he's like a white Chris Rock. His long bits--criticized by another reviewer as "long-winded"--are fluid and creative. In fact this is the best comedy I've heard (I just heard it in June '04) since Rock's latest HBO special, and better than most anything else of recent memory.
Free Music Review: Very, very funny and dark Hit: 5 StarsThis double album is not for those who enjoy a light-hearted and inoffensive everyman joke. David Cross' material is extremely dark and sharp. For those who share in his sense of humor, this collection never gets old. No one is safe from his skewering, as David runs the gamut on politics, religion, sports, the media, and...politics and religion. David Cross has no fear and calls out hypocrites as he sees them. Even his audience interaction is great on here. It is laugh-out-loud funny, and proof that intelligent comedy still exists.
