Free Music Notes for Hit ManFree Music Review: I ONLY WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE Hit: 5 Stars
I was dumbstruck by the announcement that a DVD/CD of the David Foster and Friends Concert would make it out just in time for Christmas 2008. I was equally dumbstruck by the quality of the guest artist performances including the stunning Katharine McPhee, Brian McKnight, Boz Scaggs, and Renee Olstead. The sound engineering behind this magnificent concert was unbelievably crisp....Indeed, I never knew a LIVE concert could look and sound so good on DVD/CD. I couldn't ask for anything else.... with a full symphony orchestra.... David Foster at the piano.... and Renee delivering a decidedly more mellow arrangement of the Chaka Khan classic "Through The Fire". It was THE BEST !!!! I only wish I could have been there !!!! And in addition, I have since learned that David is performing in concert with guest artists including Peter Cincotti, Charice, Brian McKnight, and Philip Bailey at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas on Saturday May 9th, 2009. I only hope a DVD/CD of this special event is released at some point (maybe in time for next Christmas!!!!) as the beautiful music made by David Foster and His Friends deserves to be experienced more than once in a lifetime.
P.S. As of April 24th, 2009 I have revisited this stunning concert dvd, and I too have now been blown away by Charice's commanding performance of the showstopping "I Have Nothing"; and Michael Buble and Blake Shelton's take on "Home" truly highlights their solid showmanship. I have to declare this work is so special....so professional that I imagine with each and every revisit I'll most likely uncover another shining moment.
P.S. HOORRAAYYYY!!!! As of October 5th, 2010 I have discovered the absolute BEST news !!!! David Foster will be returning to Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, on October 15th, 2010 for another live performance with a star-studded lineup of artists. This concert will be recorded as a part of PBS's Great Performances series, which will then be made available as a CD/DVD set. HOORRAAYYY!!!! Longtime personal favourite Natalie Cole will appear as one of David's special guests, I can only hope she performs two (2) of her most unforgettable classic songs ever - both beautifully and hauntingly arranged by David "Unforgettable", and the equally show-stopping "Both Sides Now". I wonder who the, as yet, unnamed special guests will be???? (I am hoping they may include one, or perhaps two of the following great talents - Paul Anka, Heather Headley, James Ingram, Patti LaBelle and Katherine Jenkins) :-)
Free Music Review: Witness One of the Best Group of Talents to Share Stage in Years Hit: 5 Stars
This DVD/CD features one of the best group of talents put together in one concert in years. David Foster is reminding us once again that he is a musical genius and a living legend. (As well as a great promoter). Recorded live in performance at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center. Watching this DVD is such a mesmerizing magical experience of pure entertainment. It glued me to my seat for full 2 hours. A fantastic value for both the DVD and CD (It was 18$ the first time it was offered directly from Amazon). I know some friends who will buy this just to see Andre Bocelli and Josh Groban's names on it. If you are a big fan of these 2 greats, you are in a much bigger treat. Bought one and decided to get more for friends and family (whom I am familiar with their musical tastes) as a holiday gift.
The cast consists of the biggest names in the industry. Andre Bocelli, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Peter Cetera, Boz Scaggs, Celine Dion, Brian McKnight, Eric Benet, Kenny G, Babyface, Blake Shelton, Cheryl Lynn, Katherine McPhee with cameos by Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston, John Travolta and Kevin Costner. There are so many that I will not be surprised if I forget to mention some. And of course, David's introduction of his newest discovery - Charice. I thought that I am already too old to get goosebumps; but her performance on this event was absolutely jaw dropping. So small that you just can't imagine where the power of that voice is coming from. She practically brought down the house; and borrowing from David Foster's own words, "Oh my Gosh! A Star is born tonight".
Boz Scaggs' haunting voice and melody hasn't changed much. Shown together with some clips from a movie, it may brings some nostalgic moments/memories.
Michael Buble and Blake Shelton did a rare duet of their respective versions of "Home". Later on, Buble did his signature "Save the Last Dance for Me" with the whole audience in participation.
Bocelli had the crowd on its feet even before he opened his mouth. His voice send chills to everybody.
For the finale, Josh Groban took David's seat on the piano for his rendition of "You Raised me Up" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" with Brian McKnight.
Surprised to hear David Foster (whom I never heard before) sang a few lines - he sounds not bad at all.
The DVD also includes some behind the scene clips.
Free Music Review: More would be a very good thing Hit: 5 Stars
I ordered this being a bit bored with movies at the moment. Did not expect it to be something I would watch repeatedly. First, it is hard verbalize the quality of a live performance show but when it's bad, you know it. This show was fantastic. None of the performers wore ear monitors, the band was very clear to hear, when it needed to be, lighting and camera shots were perfect. I really can't say enough about the sound quality. Persons in charge of that deserve accolades. Well done.
Most of the women, although talented, were a disappointment. Katherine McPhee can sing but might as well have been a "dead fish". Her un-enthusiastic demeanor dragged down the performance of The Prayer with Andrea Bocelli like a giant, sinking rock. Ugg, in the future let's ONLY have Celine Dion paired with Andrea. He deserves to have someone who is as passionate as he is to sing with. Rounding out the disappointment, Charice, again, whom can sing, did a 'note-by-note' mimic of Whitney Houston, hand gestures included. This is somewhat forgivable as she is young. Renee Olstead, well, not memorable by any means. Terrible dress too. Cheryl Lynn, great song, great singer, performance was bloated complete with un-necessary and un-interesting dancers.
The men were out-done completely by Michael Bublé. David is correct saying "Michael is a gift". I cannot recall a more enjoyable performance to watch of someone on stage that loves what they are doing. Maybe Ricky Martian's Grammy Performance. Michael has a wonderful voice and endearing quirkiness. The collaboration between him and the "band" is an unending, pleasure to watch and hear.
Josh Groban has no equal. He is unto himself, a singular, musical enigma. His voice "mesmerizes your ears", whereas Michael's voice "pinches your cheek" ( your choice which one, wink ). I have to include Michael Johns because he has wonderful, quality voice. I could easily hear him out in front of an arena band even though he does not seem to be going in that direction. Oddly enough, he dresses that way. Egad, he and Josh could use the name of a good tailor from either Brian Mcknight or Michael Bublé. Brian Mcknight, was the hidden gem in this show. He is a very snappy dresser and sang the heck out of everything. More of him would be a very good thing.
Free Music Review: Exemplary!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this album because I like Charice. However, I was surprised and amazed by how much talent are compiled for this album. The bonus is you get a DVD and CD, and the price is so reasonable for such abundance of great singers and wonderful songs included in the album. The DVD is exceptional, with such clear audio and video, that it almost feels like BluRay on regular TV. The sound is so clear! I just wish David included all the performances in the DVD, and added more tracks in the CD. If there is a Volume II, I would buy it in a heartbeat!
If anyone who reads this review ever wonder why Charice was considered the highlight of the concert, you will not find it in this CD/DVD. The song that gave her the longest standing ovation of the night was not included. If you want to watch it, you have to go to YouTube and type in Charice, Las Vegas part 2. You will understand after that. Her song in this CD/DVD is great, but her rendition of "And I Am Telling You" was incomparable. Many people will like the duet of "The Prayer" by Andrea Bocelli and Katherine McPhee. Charice and Andrea however did a duet of this song when Charice went to Italy to join Andrea for a concert on his birthday, and it kind of ruined it for me, because that duet was so much better than what you will see here. The mentioned duet can only be seen on amateur video on YouTube.
Free Music Review: David Foster is great , so mucha talent! Hit: 5 Stars
The CD is good but the DVD is just great. Everytime I put it on, I tell myself I am just going to listen, two hours later I am mesmerized. Some of the artists like Charise I had heard of but had never witnessed them entertaining....all I can do is mimick David's great big WOW!!!A talent like David's does not come along every day.
I am so glad they did this great Gala. One of my favorites is Katharine McPhee and Andrea Bocelli, even though he is old enough to be her father, they sing and interact with one another like two star struck lovers. No doubt there is some real chemistry, regardless of age. The group of songs by Peter Cetera is great, he sure can sing and what a rapore withthe audiance. Brian McKnight....what a voice and stage presence. I love the duet of him and Josh Groban. I am not a big fan of Michael Buble, but he is very good on this CD/DVD set. I was introduced to BlakeShelton, generally I am not a country fan but has a great voice and obviosly is indebted to David's magic. I think you will be glad you purchased this set. I am sure ther are artists that I also deeply love...their names just escape me at the moment.
