Free Music Review: What Island is this?
Hit: 5 Stars

David Gilmour' ears, mind, and hands are the institutional memory of Pink Floyd. It looks like he can do no wrong.

For me, listening to this whole album in the car tonight was like hearing a new PF album, but better in certain ways. You can hear the maturity. Very mellow music, like elevator music - IF your elevator happens to go up to the asteroid belt. The music is a little more harmonically advanced than my favorites from the golden age of PF. There are flashbacks to PF music from Ummagumma up through the Wall (which is the last one I listened to very much). Meddle is the one this most reminds me of, I guess because Island is so guitar-centric. However, Dave's not plundering his past repetoire, just making some neat allusions.

I figure five stars - this is great if you like Pink Floyd, a must-hear CD.

The arrangements are impeccable, like a pillow of wind supporting that signature pinched strat sound, plus every other guitar sound known to Gilmour fans. I couldn't make out all of the words in the car, but that really doesn't matter much. Track 7 is really cool, bringing the biggest grin to my face. Just a trippy instrumental with a neat set of interlocking riffs.

If you like this one, check out Dave's live DVD. Also check out the latest couple of albums by Phil Manzanera.

this album really shows that david gilmour is still a great artist without roger waters. and dont think im dissing roger because hes a great solo artist to. well anyway, i saw this cd at my local wall mart and thought, wow i didnt know gilmour put out a new album, ive got to buy it, and i did. the firt song i listened to was on a island. i thought it was fantastic, and i even noticed that rick wright was the one playing the hammond organ. i think this song sounds a lot like pink floyds later work, like a momentary lapse of reason. which i also think is a good album. another one of my faves is take a breath. it is probably the heaviest song on the album and i think it sorta sounds like run like hell. some other great songs on this album are, this heaven, a pocketfull of stones, and where we start. probably my fave instramental on this album is red sky at night. this song has david on the saxaphone. i had no idea david played sax. and hes very good at it to. another song i must comment about is the blue, this song has david and rick wright singing together. and david does a very impressive guitar solo at the end to. also i must comment about the packaging of this album, it is so cool. this album is like a photo album or abook, whatever you want to call it. buy the album and youll see what i mean. i reccomend this album to every floyd fan.

Free Music Review: Great comeback Sir David!
Hit: 5 Stars

Once again David Gilmour prooved himself as a true artist with or without Pink Floyd, he shines!

On An Island and The Blue are probably the best tracks on this album.

Castellorizon: Fine piece of work here reminds you of 'Lets Get Metaphysical' from About Face 1984 solo.

On An Island: Gives a touch of Pink Floyd and quite similar to his previous solo album sounds featuring typical great Gilmourish guitar solo in the end. The best track on album.

The Blue: Another great track, beautiful and relaxing song with a lovely guitar solo.

Red Sky At Night: Background music resembles to The Division Bell sounds, David should have used guitar here instead of saxophone but not bad.

Take a Breath & This Heaven: Assures David still rocks.

Then I Close My Eyes: Amazing, terrific instrumental! David on guitars & Robert Wyatt on cornett. A delightful gift for fans!

Smile & Pocketful of Stone: Wonderful songs indeed!

Where We Start: Good end of the show, as Near The End was best ending to 1984's About Face and High Hopes to The Division Bell.

On An Island is celestial & heavenly album. Highly recommended for About Face & The Division Bell admirers and all Floydians ofcourse.

Free Music Review: Open Your Mind and Heart
Hit: 5 Stars

Make no mistake about it, this is a superb piece of work. The entire album glows with a strange moonlit quality that seeps into the psyche with repeated listens. The title track alone is worth the price of admission. Gilmour's solo, particularly the fist solo break, certainly ranks with his best work-focused, lyrical guitar playing at its best.

This work was obviously a labor of love for D.Gilmour. The dreamy quality to much of the music that is so strangely off-putting to many reviewers, is powerfully evocative of a certain time and place in the man's life. Contrary to many reviewer comments, the lyrics have a poignant, timeless quality that speak volumes if you have the patience to dig beneath the surface.

As to all the negative reviews, I'm not sure what to say. I'm tempted to go off on a rant but I'll restrain myself. I sense that the bulk of the criticism comes from an inability to view a work by an artist of Gilmour's stature with any objectivity. This music was obviously not intented to be a head-banging affair. Much of Pink Floyd's best work has this same slow, quiet, haunting flow. I'm not sure if I'd characterize 'Echos' or 'The Great Gig in the Sky' as energetic.

At any rate, if you can't 'get' this music-your loss.

Free Music Review: Super mellow, super smooth Gilmour
Hit: 5 Stars

I shouldn't be shocked that some here have really trashed this album. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and my opinion of them is that they are obtuse and incapable of accepting anything that doesn't sound like The Wall or DSOTM. Get over it people. Those amazing albums will never even come close to being duplicated. David brings us a super smooth, and super mellow album. He is an aging rocker, and like many of his contemporaries he has produced a solo album that isn't injected with 30 year old testosterone-laden songs. It is well arranged and has rich textures and soundscapes, and David's voice is as smooth as ever. Polly does fine work on the lyrics, contrary to what others here have said about them. I agree that when David and Roger worked together, they were a perfect example of the whole being much bigger than the individual parts. But so what. That Floyd magic lives on, but will never be equalled again. So enjoy this album for what it is...no delusions of grandeur, no attempts to slide a fast one past anybody. It is a personal endeavor for Gilmour and for those who enjoy it will enjoy it immensely. For those who don't (there will always be the few), too bad for your close-mindedness. Looking forward to seeing you, David, in Chicago in April!
