Free Music Review: Great
Hit: 5 Stars

5 stars. Not the best lyrics...but listenable. But why are you going to buy this album? If you were just looking for great lyrics, you wouldn't be interested. Its the MUSIC here people. I cant understand the negative reviews for bad lyrics really. I mean, you buy a David Gilmour album.....for the MUSIC. It isnt that hard.

David and guests sing the lyrics incredibly. Crosby and Nash have incredible air in their voice. David's guitar playing is out of this world....he has experimented with his tone more apparently...fantastic. And what can you say about the other recording musicians? They are world class. Very obscure instruments and sounds thrown in to great effect. Musically, the album is nothing less than breathtaking.

Id like to also address the negative cutting comments made about him saying this is the best thing he's done. Face it people. 1) This album is a no contest winner against his other solo stuff. 2) It is better than any post-Waters Floyd. 3) Dave didnt do the Final Cut and earlier stuff on his own...and he doesnt claim to have. So whats so hard? It is the BEST thing that HE, nearly alone, has done.

Free Music Review: A Beautiful Album...
Hit: 5 Stars

I am pleasantly surprised by this latest work from Mr. David Gilmour. I am a HUGE Pink Floyd fan and I heartily agree that this is by far one of the best of the Floyd solo albums. I own every Floyd album, every solo albums, and tons of bootlegs so I am quite well informed in the ways of the almighty Floyd. I'll take my previous statement one step further and say that it is probably better than the last two Pink Floyd outings, "Momentary Lapse of Reason" and "The Division Bell". The entire CD is very interesting to listen to and doesn't feel forced in the slightest. It has a great flow with many beautiful moments of sonic soundscapes to entice the ear. I always thought that MLOR and Division Bell sounded too much like they were trying to sound like Pink Floyd. "On An Island" has many of the aspects of Floyd that I love and they sound so natural in these songs. This is Gilmour at his best. His playing is flawless and his tone is incredible, as always. This CD will appeal mostly to Floyd fans but should still hold up to the casual listener. It's certainly a purchase I have not a single regret in having made. Good work, Mr. Gilmour!

Free Music Review: Great music from a legend in progressive rock
Hit: 5 Stars

If your favorite Floyd songs were David Gilmour numbers then this CD is for you. If you liked Narrow Way from Ummagumma, Fat Old Sun from Atom Heart Mother, Childhood's End from Obscured by the Clouds, Comfortably Numb from The Wall, then you will love this CD. If you liked Short and Sweet, So far Away, Out of the Blue, and Near the End from David's solo albums, then this CD is for you. To understand Pink Floyd, go back to Ummagumma, the studio album where each band member makes a contribution. Here you have Roger Waters making irritating animal sounds while David Gilmour comes up with the trademark future sound of Pink Floyd in Narrow Way, great soft voice soaring guitar -- music that floats you in the air. If irritating animal sounds are your idea of Pink Floyd, you can still get them ... just buy Roger's solo CD's -- his voice has degraded that much. In any case, all you one-star reviewers should be thanking David for the trademark Floyd sound. If you want to talk about some inane lyrics take a look at Amused to Death ... maybe they're deep if you haven't grown up in the almost 40 years that Floyd's been around...

Free Music Review: Gilmour has a hit!
Hit: 5 Stars

What a wonderful CD. This is by far his best solo effort and is probably better than the last 2 Floyd CD's as well. I've only listened to it twice, but the word that best sums up the effort is "smooth".

Gilmour's dripping guitar chords permeate this marvelous CD, which definitely has a "Floydian Sound" to it, but also sounds like something a bit different too that I can't quite put my finger on yet. Maybe it's the Polly Samson or David Crosby influence, but I think that David's lyric writing has finally reached the level of his music writing, which I don't think occurred in his earlier efforts.

Also, there's good variety in the music from fast songs like "Take a breath" to the more mellow "Then I close my Eyes", the simple "Smile", and there's great harmonies on the title track. I would give it 4 1/2 stars, but since you can't give 1/2, I'll give it 5.

The packaging is cool too, and the only downside for me was not getting the bonus CD that was bundled in the cd at other retailers.

Now, how about that final Floyd record and a tour with Roger?

Free Music Review: Gorgeous romantic music from Floyd guitarist
Hit: 5 Stars

Gilmour-Waters (and to an extent the rest of floyd) are one of rock's great songwriting teams, creating some of the most powerful and trail-blazing music ever recorded. Since the split, Waters" solo work has provided evidence that he was the band's central "brain" & conceptualist with a focus on biting lyrics and almost operatic rock.

If there was ever doubt, this album makes clear that Gilmour, more than any other band member, was Floyd's romantic heart. There is none of the biting lyrics or political commentary that Waters brought to the table here. Rather, this album is filled with gorgeous atmospheric music that goes right to the heart. Gilmour appears mellower, wiser and playing with greater nuance than ever, sometimes sounding like Jeff Beck.

Island is for anyone who likes mellow romantic music and who loved the lush beautiful soundscapes of Floyd's bes work. Download this album, slap on your head phones and prepare to be transported.

My only request to the artist -- pls don't make us wait another decade or two for the next solo album!
