Free Music Review: Even better than I'd hoped

I've only known about David Gray for about a year now. I was exposed to his music on satellite radio, when I would often do a double-take wondering if I was hearing a new Bob Dylan song. His Greatest Hits album is, well, great. So I was eager to buy his latest collection, Draw the Line. I was hoping for a couple good songs that would be worthy of a future Greatest Hits album; but what I got was a fantastic record with almost no holes. From start to finish, Draw the Line is a ride. It's got hard-hitting tunes that you can't stop humming like "Fugitive," "First Chance," "Jackdaw," and "Stella The Artist." It's got moving ballads such as "Kathleen" and "Transformation." And it really excels with it's semi-dark, powerful tracks like "Nemesis" and "Full Steam." If this is the kind of album David Gray routinely puts together, I'll be first in line for future releases.

Recorded in London, and produced by the artist himself, David Gray's voice and songwriting are as distinct as ever on the release, showcasing the intensity with which he performs. Ripe with melancholic beauty, key tracks on the album include the glorious sublimely layered 'Fugitive,' the album's lead single, the pensive 'Draw the Line' and the emotive composition 'Nemesis.' Also featured on the album are two duets not to be missed with Jolie Holland and Annie Lennox.David Gray has come full circle back to his roots on his latest release, Draw the Line, which is significant given the fact that he could have easily succumb to the many distractions of success. Long-time fans of David Gray who gravitated to his earlier releases, including A Century Ends, Flesh, and Sell, Sell, Sell, will be happy to know he has not wandered far from the musical path he set out on nearly 20 years ago. The result is a humble album punctuated by his gritty baritone, layered acoustics, and a sobering thrush that comes across as an amped-up middle-aged confession half the time, and a sweet lullaby the rest.

He is full of confidence following a long period where he was stuck in the ?shock of success? that descended on him with the ubiquitous accolades and critical acclaim of White Ladder.
