I've listened to David Nail's long-anticipated CD four times as I write this, from the first track to the last, and can state unequivocally that this is one of the strongest debut albums I've run across in several years. There may be certain songs I like better than others, but still ... all of them are above average, and as a collection they form an excellent showcase for Mr. Nail's distinctive talents.
Although he is primarily being marketed as a country singer, Nail definitely has strong cross-over appeal. His music has rock, pop, soul, and rhythm & blues influences running throughout it, and he excels at every style he attempts. That's because his voice is such a remarkable instrument, and he controls it masterfully, singing with impeccable phrasing and investing the lyrics with genuine emotion. Listen to "Red Light", a song about a man whose idyllic Sunday afternoon drive is shattered when his girlfriend suddenly breaks up with him ... you can hear the heartache, confusion, and sense of disbelief in Nail's powerful vocal. Or sample the title track, "I'm About to Come Alive", and listen to the hope of a man promising to break free from old defeats and to redeem himself in the eyes of his lover and most importantly, himself. And then treat yourself to the wistful regret of "Missouri" in which a man urges his partner to leave him and escape the pain he has caused her ... what a beautiful, mournful admission of a man's failure to succeed in love.
Here's a sincere hope that Mr. Nail's first CD is not only a triumphant gift to music lovers, but a promise of a long career to come. Nail's potential is rare, and his future is dazzling.
