Free Music Notes for SerenityFree Music Review: Some flaws, but I rather liked it Hit: 4 StarsI do agree with some of the negative comments already posted, but the soundtrack does grow on you. The major failing is that the end title music was not kept in it's entirety (even if it meant a repetition). I'm not sure it's fair to criticize the short lengths of the opening title and end pieces. They are after all bookends (the abrupt cut-off in each case corresponds to a piece of the ship flying off and Mal's "what was that?"). It would have been nice to have those really lovely themes expanded, but I think this would have meant actually rewriting them and bringing in the entire orchestra to remix this (not likely on a movie soundtrack CD budget). I've driven around for days with this CD playing, and it is a really does grow on you. Again, bits and pieces of this rate as really good classical music in their own right, but it's not a thematic whole. Just cut it some slack, after all it's a movie sound track, not a symphony.
Free Music Review: An OK movie soundtrack, could've been somewhat better, but I imagine it fits the movie perfectly. Hit: 4 StarsKeep in mind - this is a movie soundtrack, so it's not really meant to just be "listened" to on its own. I can't get enough of the Serenity track and the End Credits. Those have the great sound I was looking for, and unfortunately they are very, very short songs (they should've been much longer!).
All in all a good piece to add to your collection if you like Firefly and Serenity.
Free Music Review: Disappointed Hit: 2 StarsIm a huge fan of the TV series and the film. When I bought the TV soundtrack, my only disappointment was that the tracks were too short. I was hoping the movie soundtrack would provide more of the same, only longer.
The beauty of the TV music was its mixture of eastern and western musical influences, perfectly in sync with the cultural mixture in the series. The movie soundtrack has none of that. It's modern through discordant melodies, not through new combinations of music. And it doesn't have any of the eastern, western flavors. Its standard movie music. I like Newman in general, and have other soundtracks from him. But this time I think he missed the mark both musically, and in capturing (or not) the tone of Firefly.
Free Music Review: Good without being outstanding Hit: 4 StarsI'm a huge fan of the Firefly series and Serenity, the subsequent film. The concept was the most original science fiction idea in many years and it was a great tragedy that the TV show only ran for one season. So with that said, how does the Serenity sound track shape up?
In my opinion, this is a good soundtrack without being an outstanding one but the music is not the same as in the TV series. It still stands up pretty well in its own right however. There are some catchy, folksy themes that fit in well with the futuristic western plot combined with a few haunting melodies that go well too. My main criticism is that some of the music based around the action that happens late in the film is a bit loud and jarring to the ear. I would have preferred more of the folksy tunes and less of the loud jarring stuff.
I think it's a four star effort though.
Free Music Review: the best parts are too short- still great though Hit: 3 Starslike some other folks here, i agree that there are some really wonderful moments on this soundtrack (serenity theme, trade station robbery, funeral/rebuilding serenity, love, end theme), with about 12 of the 23 tracks going from great to beautiful. trouble is, they are pretty short, too short in several instances (well, too short for satisfying listening, but of course well timed for the film). the 'action' music, which comprises about 50% of the soundtrack, is less appealing, at least away from the context of actually seeing the film. i actually prefer david newman's music here to serenity more than gregg edmonson's music to firefly. newman has a much bigger budget, and so can use much more varied and interesting instrumentation, and writes more intense compositions. some of the themes he comes up with, notably the main serenity theme and river's haunting theme, are beautiful, and it's especially nice how both are woven into the entire soundtrack as leitmotifs. since this cd can be had fairly cheaply, whether from amazon or as a digital download from emusic or itunes, it is well worth purchasing. like others, i do wish some of the other incidental music, especially the bluesy theme as serenity descended the mine shaft at new haven, was included here, as well as the great arrangement of the ballad of serenity after the end credits (though i understand it's exclusion here, since newman didn't compose it).
