Free Music Review: Not the best reissue

This is a fine album, altho a it is a fractured one. The original record had one side of artistic rock tunes, and another side of synthesizer doodles. The first side was excellent, and contained some of Sylvian's best post-Japan tracks. The second, with its mellow, repetitive synth pieces, was not for all tastes. Generally I find these a little insipid, but when the listener is in a certain reflective frame of mind, they can hit the spot. I am glad this album is still available, but the record company's attempt to spruce it up has not been a success. They threw in a couple of remixes (probably without the artist's approval or participation), and then added a few more of Sylvian's synthesizer meditations from other records to fill it out to 2 disc length. I could be wrong about this (please correct me if I am), but there does not appear to be any additional material here that was intended for the original album, or anything from the same sessions, or live material from the same time period, etc. It takes material like that to make for an interesting repackaging job. Otherwise it seems like the company is just trying to fill up an extra disc so that they can charge some more for the album.
